Box Score MANCHESTER, N.H. – The #10/8 Manhattanville women's hockey team suffered its second defeat of the season on Saturday, falling to Saint Anselm by a score of 3-2 in an ECAC East Conference contest. Juniors
Alla Traun (Edina, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds (JWHL)) and
Sydney Asselstine (Hartington, Ontario/Nepean Wildcats (PWHL)) each scored a goal and classmate
Michele Meggiolaro (Whippany, N.J./New Jersey Colonials (MAWHA)) recorded two assists but the effort was not enough to defeat the Hawks, who remain undefeated.
The game started out tightly contested as the teams traded scoring chances in the first period. With just over a minute to go in the opening frame, Saint Anselm forward Alison Butler received a pass from Franny Nicholson and was able to shoot it past junior netminder
Kirsten Shaughnessy (Le Center, Minn./LeSueur-Henderson St. Peter) to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead heading into intermission.
The second period saw a lot more action than the first, with a total of three goals being scored. Manhattanville jumped on the Hawks early as Traun scored her first goal of the season just 40 seconds into the period. The tie did not last very long, however, as Saint Anselm scored on the power play at the 4:50 mark of the second period off the stick of senior forward Courtney Winters. Saint Anselm's power-play unit would capitalize again less than three minutes later when freshman forward Alexandra Starzyk tallied her third goal of the season at the 7:27 mark.
The Valiants were able to close the gap to 3-2 with 9:52 remaining in the third period when Asselstine scored her second goal of the season, hammering home a pass from Meggiolaro. Unfortunately that was all Manhattanville would be able to get past junior goaltender Lindsey Brown, who recorded 29 saves against the Valiants.
The loss drops Manhattanville to 1-2-1 (1-1-0 ECAC East) on the season. The team will regroup this week in preparation for their first home games of the season next Friday and Saturday as they take on Plymouth State and the University of Southern Maine at Terry Conners Rink.
