Box Score STAMFORD, CONN. – The #9 Manhattanville women's hockey team continued their perfect home record and extended its winning streak to three games on Tuesday night, defeating the Neumann Knights by a score of 4-3 at Terry Conners Rink.
The reigning ECAC East Player of the Week, junior
Sydney Asselstine (Hartington, Ontario/Nepean Wildcats (PWHL)), continued her dominant play of late by tallying a goal and two assists on the evening. The first line of the Valiants, consisting of Asselstine and classmates
Alla Traun (Edina, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds (JWHL)) and
Michele Meggiolaro (Whippany, N.J./New Jersey Colonials (MAWHA)), have established themselves as one of the best lines in the country. Traun added a goal and two assists while Meggiolaro had a goal and an assist as well, as the line was on the ice for all four Valitnt goals, including a short-handed goal by senior defenseman
Caitlyn Beauvais (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia/Pacific Steelers (JWHL)).
The two teams played each other tightly in the first period, which resulted in a 0-0 score heading into the first intermission. Valiant freshman goaltender
Dana DeMartino (Massapequa Park, N.Y. /Massapequa ) and Neumann's Justina Mayr combined to stop all 15 shots they faced in the opening 20 minutes.
The second period was action-packed as the teams traded goals early. Neumann opened the scoring less than a minute into the period as sophomore forward Shanelle Doucette picked up her second goal of the season off a pass from junior Amanda Simpson.
The Valiants struck back quickly, as they managed to even the score at 1-1 less than three minutes later when Meggiolaro deked past a defender to go in alone on Mayr before burying the puck into the back of the net for her fourth goal of the year.
After Neumann increased its lead to 2-1 at the 6:56 mark, Manhattanville turned up the offense and their special teams helped them to not only tie, but take the lead against the Knights. Asselstine scored a power-play goal at the 8:20 mark off a feed from junior captain
Rachael Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn./Sound Shore Warriors (MAWHL)), which was followed by Beauvais' short-handed goal on a delayed penalty just over two minutes later that gave the Valiants their first lead of the game.
Manhattanville struck again halfway through the third period as Traun scored a goal coming off another set-up by Asselstine and Morrison. This gave the Valiants a 4-2 lead, and while Neumann scored with just over five minutes remaining, Manhattanville was able to shut them down and walk away with a win.
DeMartino had another solid game in the net, turning away 24 of the 27 shots she faced to improve to 2-0-0 in her young career. Mayr had 25 saves on the night to suffer her sixth straight loss to start the year.
The Valiants will have the next week off to enjoy their Thanksgiving break and will return to the ice next Wednesday, December 4 on the road at Amherst College.
