Meggiolaro, Boucher Net Goals in 2-0 Shutout Over Castleton

Freshman Chelsea Boucher picked up her first career goal on Friday evening against Castleton State.
Box Score RUTLAND, Vt. – The Manhattanville women's hockey team got goals from sophomore Michelle Meggiolaro and freshman Chelsea Boucher (Gilford, N.H./Hebron Academy (Maine)) as they went on to win 2-0 over the Castleton State Spartans at the Spartan Arena on Friday evening.

In the first period, Castleton was first to register a shot on goal as junior Mary Evans (Ferndale, Mich./Honeybaked (TOEHL)) was up to the task and made the opening save 1:13 into the game. Manhattanville then went on a roll offensively and rattled off 11 straight shots with Paula Stevens stopping all eight shots that were on target. After a brief offensive burst by Castleton, Manhattanville then took control of the puck and brought it back down ice.

After senior Mary Rose Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn./Connecticut Stars (MFYHL)) had her shot turned aside, it was Meggiolaro to put the puck home and give the Valiants the early 1-0 lead just 8:30 into the contest. Morrison and sophomore Alla Traun (Edina, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds (JWHL)) picked up the assists on Meggiolaro's fifth goal of the season, and fourth goal in the last seven games.

Play was fairly even through the remainder of the first period but it was the Valiants to take the 1-0 lead into the first intermission. Manhattanville also had a 13-7 edge in shots in the opening session.

As play resumed in the second period it didn't take long before Manhattanville got on the board again as it was Boucher to pick up the puck behind her own net and skate coast-to-coast before lifting the puck over Stevens' shoulder to give Manhattanville the 2-0 lead. For Boucher, it was her first collegiate goal, while classmate Melissa Hauptman (Smithtown, N.Y./Sound Shore Warriors (MAWHL)) picked up her first career assist in the process.

Both sides had a power play chance each through the remainder of the middle period, but neither side could find the back of the net. The second period also saw both sides reach double-figures in terms of shots as Castleton held an 11-10 edge in the period, but trailed through 40 minutes 23-18.

The third period saw nothing in terms of goals on the boards, but there were plenty of chances for both sides. At 5:28 into the third period the Spartans took a penalty to give the Valiants a chance to put the game away but senior Alyssa Taylor (Craik, Saskatchewan/Sait Polytechnic (ACAC)) had her shot trickle just wide of the net on a solid effort driving into the goal crease. Moments later Morrison had another good chance on a backhand shot that was turned aside by Stevens.

As time worked against the Spartans, they were able to muster 10 shots in the final 4:09 of the contest but the Valiants had another solid performance blocking shots, and those that they were unable to block were stopped by Evans.

For Manhattanville, Evans picked up the shutout for her second of the season as she improves to 8-6-1 on the season after making 31 saves on the afternoon, two shy of her season-high. Taking the loss was Stevens after allowing the two Manhattanville goals and making 31 saves in the losing effort.

Manhattanville (12-7-1, 10-2-1 ECAC East) will resume its weekend road trip tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. when they take on the Pilgrims of New England College.
