From High to Low: Women's Hockey Stunned by St. Michael's, 2-1

Box Score COLCHESTER, Vt. – A day after defeating nationally ranked Norwich on Friday night, the Manhattanville women's hockey team suffered a loss to the St. Michael's Purple Knights by the score of 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.

The Valiants were sluggish out of the gate after they were shuttled to the arena from the hotel after complications kept the team bus from starting prior to the game. At the 6:56 mark, Manhattanville took a minor penalty to give the Purple Knights a power play chance. Just under a minute into the extra skater chance, St. Michael's capitalized with a power play goal off the stick of Emily Loebs.

At that point, the Manhattanville offense woke up and rattled off 14 straight shots, with 10 on target. St. Michael's netminder Erin Stevens made saves on nine of the ten shots as the last one went to the back of the net from senior Katie Little (Victoria, British Columbia/Team British Columbia). For Little, it was her team-leading 11th goal of the season with helpers coming from classmate Alyssa Taylor (Craik, Saskatchewan/Sait Polytechnic (ACAC)) and sophomore Alla Traun (Edina, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds (JWHL)).

Manhattanville had two power play chances through the latter stages of the period but were unable to convert on either chance. After 20 minutes of play, the Valiants had a staggering lead in terms of shots at 20-3 but the score was still tied at 1-1.

The Valiants controlled the second period in terms of shots as well with a 14-5 margin, but no goals hit the back of the net. In the middle period, Manhattanville had three power play chances including a brief seven-second 5-on-3 advantage but continued to struggle on the man-advantage.

In the third period, the Valiants killed off a penalty that had carried over from the end of the second period. After the end of the penalty Manhattanville took seven of the next nine shots taken in the contest. The Valiants took yet another costly penalty at the 4:26 mark of the 3rd period, and shortly thereafter the Purple Knights were once again celebrating a one-goal lead.

Fifteen minutes later, the Valiants were skating off the ice for the first time in 22 all-time contests with a loss at the hands of the Purple Knights. Final shots were well in favor of Manhattanville at a 43-13 clip, but the most important differential was the one on the scoreboard at 2-1.

The Valiants were 0-for-6 on their power play chances, while the Purple Knights made the most of their chances going 2-for-5 with the extra skater chance.

In goal suffering her second loss against three wins was sophomore Kirsten Shaughnessy (Le Center, Minn./LeSueur-Henderson St. Peter), who made 11 stops while yielding the two St. Michael's markers. Earning the win was Stevens (4-17-2) as she made an impressive 42 saves on 43 shots.

Manhattanville (16-8-1, 14-3-1 ECAC East) had already locked up a top-2 seed in the ECAC East Tournament, and will next play host to the New England College Pilgrims in the ECAC East Quarterfinals at a date and time to be announced. St. Michael's (4-19-1, 3-15-0 ECAC East) will take part in the ECAC Open Tournament against Holy Cross, Saint Anselm and Sacred Heart beginning next weekend.
