Box Score MANSFIELD, Conn. – Sophomore
Christie DeMarco (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream South) scored the only goal of the game in the 66th minute and freshman
Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) made three saves to make the score hold up as the Manhattanville women's soccer team started the 2013 season with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Fitchburg State on day one of the ECSU Warrior Classic, hosted by Eastern Connecticut State on Friday afternoon at the Mansfield Athletic Complex.
In a matchup that featured precious few quality chances for either side, one good strike from DeMarco was all that a severely undermanned Manhattanville squad needed to start the year with a win. In the latter stages of the 66th minute, the sophomore took a pass from junior
Tori Lettieri (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown East) on the right side of the box and tucked the ball inside the left post past FSU netminder Jillian Kirouac to put the Valiants up by a goal.
That one goal was enough for Diemicke, who made three saves to earn the win in her collegiate debut. The freshman had two stops in the final two minutes of regulation to keep the lead after not seeing any shots on target over the first 43:07 of the second stanza.
Fitchburg State held a 10-8 edge in shots, but Manhattanville held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks on the afternoon.
The Valiants will return to action tomorrow on day two of the ECSU Warrior Classic, as Manhattanville takes on Saint Joseph (Conn.) beginning at 4 p.m.
