Undermanned Women's Soccer Squad Falls to Saint Joseph

Box Score MANSFIELD, Conn. – Playing with only 12 field players seemed to finally catch up to the Manhattanville women's soccer team on Saturday afternoon, as the Valiants dropped a 4-0 decision to Saint Joseph on the second and final day of the ECSU Warrior Classic, hosted by Eastern Connecticut State at the Mansfield Athletic Complex.

Playing without almost half a roster due to injuries, Manhattanville (1-1) had trouble generating many scoring opportunities against a very solid Blue Jay squad. Saint Joseph (1-1) posted a commanding 23-6 edge in shots, including a 14-2 edge in the opening half of play.

Despite the shot disparity, the Valiants hung with the Blue Jays for the first half of the opening frame, but Saint Joseph scored three times in just over 10 minutes to break the game open. Patricia Nolan scored her first of the afternoon in the 29th minute with a header off the crossbar, and then she and Sara Barnick each scored in the span of 78 seconds later in the half to make it a 3-0 score headed into halftime.

The Valiant defense settled down in the second half, but Barnick still managed to net her second score of the afternoon in the 78th minute to round out the scoring.

Freshman Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) suffered the loss for Manhattanville, allowing all four goals while turning aside eight other shots. Saint Joseph's Melissa Dodge made two saves for the shutout victory.

Manhattanville will look to rebound next weekend when the squad returns home for the first time this season, as the Valiants host day one of the 2013 Valiant Classic on Friday. Eastern Connecticut and Farmingdale State start off the weekend at 3:30 p.m., followed by Manhattanville and Buffalo State at 5:45 p.m. Both Valiant games next weekend will be video streamed live online at GoValiants.TV.
