Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville men's soccer team was defeated on Wednesday night after failing to hold off a dramatic comeback from Vassar, falling 3-2 (2OT) at GoValiants.com Field.
The game looked promising for the Valiants after sophomore
Dylan Moser (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) connected on a header off a throw in from junior
Alem Pelinkovic (Bronx, N.Y./Iona Prep) in the 15th minute. Moser's first goal of the season was good enough for the Valiants to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The second half looked as if Manhattanville would run away with it.
Junior
Yeyson Caballeros (Los Angeles, Calif./Fairfax) played a volley from 25 yards out that found the back of the net just four minutes into the second half, giving the Valiants a 2-0 lead in the 49th minute. But a game that appeared in control by Manhattanville eventually slipped away.
The Valiants stood their ground with a 2-0 lead headed into the final minutes of the game but couldn't quite hold on. Vassar continued their heavy pursuit on the Valiants defense and became within striking distance.
The Brewers scored their first goal of the game in the 88th minute off a corner that was deflected into the box and finished by sophomore Nick Hess, making the game 2-1 with 2:58 remaining in regulatuion. Then, with just 70 seconds remaining in regulation, senior Juliano Pereira capitalized on the equalizer on a corner kick in the 89th minute to tie the game up 2-2. The two goals in the final three minutes of the game appeared to take the life out of Manhattanville, but the teams still headed to overtime.
The first overtime period came to a close with neither team finding the net, which meant one final period of play. Five minutes into the second overtime period is when the game would come to an end after a finish off the foot from Hess for his second goal of the game. Sophomore midfielder Gavin Jennings assisted on all three goals for the Brewers, helping guide them to the comeback victory.
Vassar outshot the Valiants 22-14 but both teams had eight shots on goal. Sophomore
Steve Singson (Deer Park, N.Y./St. Anthony's) contributed five saves in net for Manhattanville but gave up all three goals.
