Box Score BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – Freshman
Alissa Primavera (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) and senior
Alyssa Taylor (Craik, Sask./Craik) combined for 21 of Manhattanville's 33 kills as the women's volleyball team picked up a 3-0 (25-18, 25-10, 26-24) victory over Sarah Lawrence in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday night at the Noyes Center.
Both players hit an even .500 for the night in helping the Valiants to a straight-set victory, as Primavera posted a match-high 13 kills and two errors while Taylor chipped in eight kills with only a pair of errors. Freshman
Megan Quinabo (Pearl City, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama) also played well as the facilitator, recording a match-best 26 assists for Manhattanville (5-2).
Kitty O'Sullivan led Sarah Lawrence (1-2) with seven kills and a match-high 12 digs.
Manhattanville started the match well with a strong first set, as the visitors scored five of the first six points and never really looked back. After Sarah Lawrence scored three in a row to get back within one, the Valiants rattled seven of the next nine to take an 11-6 advantage and take full control of the frame.
The second set started out evenly for both sides, as Manhattanvillle clung to a 9-8 lead early on. But the Valiants turned on the pressure after that, using a 10-0 run to assume control and a subsequent 6-1 run to close out the frame. In all, the visitors scored 16 of the frame's final 18 points.
The third stanza was easily the most competitive, as 25 points was not enough to decide a winner. Sarah Lawrence was the aggressor early on, jumping out to a 13-6 lead and still led by five at 14-9. The Valiants continued to hang around, but could not take the lead until a string of four straight points put the squad up by one at 21-20. The Gryphons responded with a 4-2 mini-run to move within one point of a fourth set, but Primamera would have none of it, as she posted two kills to reach match point and SLC followed with an attack error to finish off the match.
For the match, Manhattanville hit .159 as a team, while Sarah Lawrence managed only a -.043 hitting percentage on the night.
Manhattanville will be back in action this weekend at Ramapo's Roadrunner Invitational, beginning with two matches against St. Joseph's (L.I.) and Bard on Friday night at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., respectively.
