Women's Soccer Succumbs to Old Westbury, 5-2

Freshman Kerri Durkin scored the first two goals of her career on Wednesday.
Box Score WESTBURY, N.Y. – Freshman Kerri Durkin (Mahopac, N.Y./John F. Kennedy Catholic) scored the first two goals of her career, but it was not enough as SUNY Old Westbury scored the final three goals of the match to earn a 5-2 victory over the Manhattanville women's soccer team in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon at Panther Park.

Durkin and sophomore Christie DeMarco (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream South) were the lone real sources of offense on the day for Manhattanville, as the freshman scored twice off passes from the sophomore and the two players combined for all four Valiant shots on goal.

Meanwhile, Old Westbury's Stephanie Maybie had two goals and an assist to lead a Panther offense that posted a 28-11 edge in shots.

Both teams had their chances early but it was Manhattanville that struck first in the 12th minute, when Durkin struck for the first goal of her collegiate career. DeMarco did some nice work on the near endline to get the ball away from a Panther defender, and passed the ball to the middle of the box for Durkin, who tapped it into the far corner from six yards out.

But Old Westbury did not go away after the early Valiant score, coming back with two of their own to take a 2-1 lead into halftime. JoAnna Kettell evened the score less than four minutes after Durkin's tally, and Monika Santelli scored at the 35:59 mark. At the half, the Panthers had the edge both on the scoreboard and in the shot column, outshooting the Valiants by an 11-5 margin.

The DeMarco to Durkin connection worked to perfection again early in the second half, as a through ball by the sophomore forward fed Durkin for a breakaway chance that she slotted past Old Westbury netminder Caitlin Thomas to even the score 7:42 into the second half.

The visitors kept on the attack, coming close to the go-ahead strike on multiple occasions, and yet it was Old Westbury that scored twice in 119 seconds to take a 4-2 lead with 15:25 left on the clock. Maybie scored the go-ahead goal when sophomore Grace Kraemer (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) made the stop on a one-on-one with Kettell but Maybie was there to tap in the rebound. Then Maybie struck again less than two minutes later when she miraculously fit the ball under the crossbar from 40 yards out.

The Panthers scored once more less than five minutes later on a fluke goal, as a Valiant clearance deflected off the shins of Jenna Donahue and into the back of the net.

The Valiant goaltending tandem of freshman Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) and Kraemer combined to make 12 saves in a split of duty.

Manhattanville will be back in action on Saturday afternoon, as the Valiants host John Jay for a non-conference matchup at GoValiants.com Field beginning at 2 p.m. The match will be video streamed on GoValiants.TV beginning at 1:50 p.m.
