Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville men's soccer team won their second game in a row, beating Lehman College 3-2 in extra time. The 3-2 win is the second straight game won by that score, and the second straight won on a penalty kick by freshman
Omar Parra (Gulfport, Miss./Gulfport).
The freshmen led the way in scoring in this match as classmates
Wes Wilson (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) and
Viron Protoulis (Cape Town, South Africa/Reddam House) scored the first goals of their collegiate careers. Parra was able to score his second goal of the season and has notched consecutive game-winning goals for the Valiants.
The scoring started early in this one as Wilson intercepted a ball at midfield and dribbled down the field by himself before tucking the ball short side on Lehman goalkeeper Alejandro Romero from 15 yards out, just 2:38 seconds into the match to give the home team an early lead.
"I think the early goal actually worked against us psychologically," said head coach
Gregg Miller. "The mindset seemed to change after we scored that goal to become one of complacency. It's important that we learn quickly that there are no easy games in college soccer."
And as Miller noted, the score did not remain 1-0 for long as Lehman junior midfielder Ronniel Mendez received a through ball from Bulgarian midfielder Aleh Kazak and chipped a shot past sophomore goalkeeper
Willie Silber (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) just over 10 minutes later. As the minutes ticked down a 1-1 tie at halftime seemed inevitable, but Protoulis was able to take a cross from freshman
Jamie Macchia (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) and rip it to the upper 90 of the net with just two seconds remaining in the first half to give the home team an edge at the break.
The Valiants came out and dominated ball possession in the second half, and were less than five minutes away from their second straight win until Mendez was able to lace a strike from 18 yards out that sophomore goalkeeper
Steve Singson (Deer Park, N.Y./St. Anthony's) could not do anything about. There were a couple more scoring chances before the 90-minute mark, but Lehman and their players did everything in their power to draw the end of regulation.
The action in extra time was heated. There were three yellow cards issued in the first four minutes of the first extra time period. The tension boiled over at the 94:22 mark as
Alem Pelinkovic (Bronx, N.Y./Iona Prep) was taken down just outside the 6-yard box for a penalty kick. Parra coolly and calmly took advantage of the penalty by drilling a shot low to the right side of the net to seal the victory.
"Lehman were a strong and physical opponent who outmatched us in that department," Miller added. "I'm pleased that we were able to eventually win the game, but we made life much more difficult than it needed to me. Our opponents only get stronger from here on out, and we must be physically and mentally prepared to battle if we want to enjoy a successful season."
The win brings Manhattanville's record to 2-1 on the season. The Valiants' next match will also be at home on Friday evening as they take on Muskingum University at 7:45 p.m. at GoValiants.com Field. The game will be video streamed live on GoValiants.TV, but Miller also appreciates those who come out to personally support the team as well.
"I want to thank the fans that came to the game - and more importantly stayed - to the end. It was not an entertaining spectacle, so some great credit goes to those who came out to support us today. I promise that the team will strive to be better and give the Manhattanville community a men's soccer team to be proud of."
