Valiants Overmatched by Farmingdale State in 4-0 Defeat

Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville women's soccer team came up short in its bid to be the only unbeaten team of this year's Valiant Classic, as the Valiants dropped a 4-0 decision to Farmingdale State in the final game of the event on Saturday night at GoValiants.com Field.

In a testament to the competitive nature of this year's two-day invitational, all four teams finished the weekend with 1-1 records, with both losing teams from yesterday coming back to win today. In addition to Farmingdale State's win, Buffalo State took a 1-0 match from Eastern Connecticut in Saturday's first game.

After putting together a tremendous effort last night in beating Buffalo State, Manhattanville was unable to match the intensity level this evening against a forceful Farmingdale State attack. The Rams a 29-2 edge in total shots on the evening, led by Ashlee Thompson with a pair of goals and Melissa Lijo with a goal and an assist.

Farmingdale State struck first in the 11th minute, when a through ball found Katlyn Merino all alone on the near endline, and she passed back across the box to Thompson for an easy put away into an empty net. The lead doubled at the 33:16 mark, when Thompson was taken down at the very edge of the penalty box and was awarded a penalty kick that she slotted home to make it 2-0 Rams.

The Rams continued the pressure in the second half but Manhattanville's defense was up to the task for most of the frame. However, the Rams took advantage of some cracks in the back line to score twice in the final 5:04 of the match to double the eventual margin of victory.

Freshman Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) was busy all night long for Manhattanville, and finished the match with 12 saves on 16 shots. Farmingdale's Breanna Blair needed to make only one save – albeit a nice diving one – over the course of the 90 minutes.

Manhattanville (2-2) will complete a three-match homestand on Wednesday, as the Valiants host NESCAC foe Trinity (Conn.) for a 5:15 p.m. matchup that will be video streamed live on GoValiants.TV beginning at approximately 5:05 p.m.
