Balanced Attack Leads Men's Hockey Past Morrisville State in Non-Conference Finale

Freshman Adam Platt's second tally of the year was the go-ahead goal in Saturday's 6-3 win.
Box Score MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Six different Valiant skaters found the back of the net and 11 players had at least one point as the Manhattanville men's hockey team closed out its non-conference schedule with a 6-3 win over Morrisville State on Saturday night at the Morrisville State IcePlex.

Coming into the game tied for 12th in Division III in goals per game, the Valiants scored at least five goals for the fifth time in the last seven contests to earn the win. Senior Luc Van Natter (Fort Erie, Ont./Aurora Tigers (OPJHL)) and junior Jake Mooney (Toronto, Ont./North York Rangers (OPJHL)) were the only Valiants with multi-point nights with a goal and an assist apiece, while seniors Craig Simchuk (Winnipeg, Man./Winnipeg Saints (MJHL)) and Mark Rivera (Belmar, N.J./Springfield Pics (EJHL)) along with freshmen Adam Platt (Trumbull, Conn./Springfield Jr. Pics (EJHL)) and Tanner Hicks (Calgary, Alta./Brooks Bandits (AJHL)) also scored in the victory.

After plenty of back-and-forth action, Manhattanville got the only goal of the opening period at the 15:43 mark, when Rivera tallied an unassisted goal for his sixth tally of the year. The Valiants went into the intermission with that one-goal lead in addition to an 8-5 edge in shots.

Morrisville State evened the score in the first minute of the second period on Joe Santino's tally, but the Valiants responded with two goals in 37 seconds to re-take the lead. Platt put the visitors back on top at the 5:20 mark, with the assist going to junior assistant captain Anton Racklin (Gothenburg, Sweden/Fairbanks Ice Dogs (NAHL)). His classmate Hicks made it a two-goal lead soon after with his second of the year from sophomore Matt Coleman (Brentwood, N.Y./Springfield Pics (EJHL)) and freshman Teagan Waugh (Nanaimo, B.C./Powell River Kings (BCHL)).

John Doyle of Morrisville State got the home team back within a goal headed into the third period, scoring a power-play goal with 7:25 remaining in the middle frame. The Mustangs posted a 16-8 edge in shots over the middle 20 minutes, but junior Brian Fleming (Saint John, N.B./Northern Cyclones (AJHL)) made 14 saves to keep his team ahead going into the final frame.

After Manhattanville killed off a penalty early in the third period, the Valiants started to gain some offensive momentum, putting together a good shift that saw several attempts on the cage of Christopher Azzano. The surge finally paid off at the 10:16 mark, when Simchuk fired a shot past Azzano off a feed from junior Paul Sirignano (St. Catharines, Ont./Thorold Blackhawks (OJHL)) to make it 4-2 with 9:44 remaining.

The scoring continued later in the frame, with Mooney and Van Natter bookending a tally by Rob Molinaro to account for the final score. For both Valiant skaters, their respective goals kept them tied for the team lead with eight tallies each so far this season.

The Valiants finished the third period with a 16-8 edge in shots, giving the team a 32-29 advantage at the end of the evening. Fleming picked up his third win of the year by turning aside 26 shots, while Azzano also made 26 saves on 32 attempts.

Manhattanville, which wraps up non-conference play with a 7-3-0 record, will begin a stretch of nine straight ECAC West Conference contests to conclude the regular season next Friday with the first of two games against Hobart at Terry Conners Rink. Friday's game will begin at 7:30 p.m., with the live GoValiants.TV coverage starting at approximately 7:15 p.m.
