Shaughnessy came off the bench and shut the door on the Spartans
Box Score CASTLETON, Vt. – The Manhattanville women's hockey team started a two-game road-trip with a 2-2 tie against conference opponent Castleton State. After falling down 2-0 in the first period, the Valiants rebounded and pulled out a tie thanks to goals scored by junior forward Alla Traun (Edina, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds (JWHL)) and freshman forward Lindsay Diot (Bethel, Conn./Boston Shamrocks).

With the puck dropping at 4:00 pm it didn't take long for the action to heat up. Castleton State scored just 3:19 into the action as freshman forward Lisa Kilroy hammered home a pass from fellow freshman Lisa Buratynski to give the Spartans a quick 1-0 lead. Shots were even at 8-8 in the first period as the teams battled back-and-forth.
With 7:27 remaining in the first period the Spartans struck again. This time sophomore defender Samantha Pion was able to rifle a puck from the point that got past freshman goaltender Dana DeMartino (Massapequa Park, N.Y. /Massapequa ). The goal, assisted by freshman forward Kim Gosselin and senior forward Allie Howard, gave the Spartans a 2-0 lead heading into intermission.

The Valiants came out aggressive in the second period, winning the shot count by 13-11. Their tenacity upfront helped them to cut the deficit in half at the 13:26 mark of the period as Lindsay Diot (Bethel, Conn./Boston Shamrocks) assisted on a great goal from Alla Traun (Edina, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds (JWHL)) that turned the tide of the game.

Diot wasn't settling for just an assist. With just 2:41 remaining in the second Diot put home a powerplay goal assisted by freshman Michaela Murdock (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y./Mid-Fairfield Connecticut Stars) and junior Trenah Stauffer (Salmon, Idaho/Colorado Select (JWHL)).

The teams battling hard in the third period and overtime were unable to separate themselves from one another. Solid goaltending in net by DeMartino, who turned away 26 of the 28 shots she faced, and Castleton State's junior goaltender Paula Stephens, who turned away 28 of 30, kept both teams even.
Manhattanville grabs a point on the contest but the tie keeps them behind Castleton State in the standings. Manhattanville will have a chance to gain some ground tomorrow as they take on ninth-ranked New England College on the road.
