STAMFORD, Conn.- After jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, the Manhattanville women's hockey team was unable to hold off a high-powered Saint Anselm squad, falling in overtime by a final score of 3-2. Junior forwards
Aubrey Bachand (Harwichport, Mass./Vermont Academy) and
Alla Traun (Edina, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds (JWHL)) were the goal-scorers for the Valiants, and junior goaltender
Kirsten Shaughnessy (Le Center, Minn./LeSueur-Henderson St. Peter) played tremendously in net, turning away 40 of the 43 shots she saw on the day.
The Valiants battled the best they could in this one but were simply unable to figure out a way to sustain offensive pressure as they were only able to put 12 shots on goal in the game.
After being outshot 14-2 in the first 18 minutes of the first period, Manhattanville was able to score on consecutive shots. The first goal game off the stick of Bachand as, from behind the net, she threw a shot towards the goal mouth which deflected off the stick of Saint Anselm senior defender Andi Foss and into the back of the net.
Just over a minute later, with only 26 seconds remaining in the period
Alla Traun (Edina, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds (JWHL)) scored one of the prettiest goals you'll ever see as she toe dragged through a defender and cut towards goal, firing a shot high over the glove hand of freshman goaltender Hannah Synnott.
Despite being outshot 15-4 in the first period, the Valiants took a 2-0 lead heading into the second period. While the Valiants played more evenly, only being outshot 13-5, the Hawks continued to control possession which culminated in a power play goal by Courtney Winters as she grabbed her own rebound and fired a puck past
Kirsten Shaughnessy (Le Center, Minn./LeSueur-Henderson St. Peter), cutting the deficit in half.
The third period and overtime period were dominated by the Hawks as Manhattanville was only able to tally three total shots in both the third period and overtime combined.
Eight total penalties were assessed during the third period and action was rarely 5-on-5 as one team seemed to always be playing a man up. It was an even strength goal with 4:25 remaining in the third that tied the game. Saint Anselm sophomore defender Halle Kent, collecting the puck in the high slot, fired a shot through traffic which beat Shaughnessy to high-blocker side.
The teams headed into overtime and after being outshot 5-0, it was the sixth shot, coming off the stick of freshman forward Allison Quinn in the low slot area that beat Shaughnessy over the glove, ending the game with just 1:22 remaining in the extra frame.
The Valiants played first of all conference opponents on Friday so the it remains to be seen how the loss will affect the Valiants in the standings. They will have a chance to regain some points in the standings tomorrow as they take on UMass-Boston at 4 p.m. at the Terry Conners Rink in Stamford.
