BRONX, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's volleyball team picked up its second straight victory with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-20) win over Lehman College in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at the APEX Center.
Manhattanville (12-13) was led by sophomore
Alissa Primavera (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) with a team-best 13 kills, her 16th double-digit total in 21 outings this season. Freshman
Kerry Mackey (Smithtown, N.Y./Christ the King) added eight kills without an error for a .364 hitting percentage, and sophomore
Megan Quinabo (Pearl City, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama) came a dig short of another double-double with a match-high 29 assists, nine digs and three aces.
Cari English and Julia Mercado helped to keep their team in the match on Saturday, combining for 28 kills for Lehman (10-11). English led all players with 16 kills and added 14 digs, while Mercado also had a double-double with 12 kills and a team-leading 17 digs.
After Lehman registered three of the match's first four points, Manhattanville took six of the next seven to grab a lead in the first set and the Valiants never looked back from there. The visitors needed only eight kills in the set, including two each from Primavera and Mackey, thanks to three Quinabo service aces and 13 Lehman errors.
Mackey and Primavera both added four more kills in the second set, which was a very close contest. The set featured an amazing 16 ties, the last of which came at 20-all after a successful Mackey spike. Three Lightning attack errors finally gave the Valiants some breathing room, and Mackey closed the door with two more kills to give the visitors a two-set lead.
After both teams used early 5-1 runs to knot the third set at six apiece, Manhattanville used three Lehman errors and a pair of kills from freshman
Aly Pappalardo (Mahopac, N.Y./Lakeland) to open up an 11-7 edge. Subbing in at 14-11, Primavera then picked up six of Manhattanville's last nine kills to close out the match.
The Valiants will look for their third straight win on Tuesday night, as the squad hosts King's (Pa.) College in another big Freedom Conference battle beginning at 7 p.m. at Kennedy Gym.
