EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – The Manhattanville men's soccer team kept its chances of earning a Freedom Conference postseason berth alive on Saturday afternoon with a 2-0 win over conference rival Wilkes University. The Valiants were led by senior
Yani Quinteros (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) and sophomore
Rob Hammerle (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville), who both scored in the victory over the Colonials.
Manhattanville (7-10, 3-3 Freedom) moves into a tie with FDU-Florham for fourth place in the conference standings with one match left, and three points behind third-place King's (Pa.) College, whom the Valiants play next weekend. If FDU-Florham defeats or ties winless Delaware Valley next weekend, the Valiants will need to beat the Monarchs by at least two goals in order to come out on top of the tiebreaker scenarios and capture a berth in the postseason.
The Valiants were aggressive from the start, scoring in just the 3rd minute when Quinteros headed home a cross from sophomore
Simon Espinosa (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River). The goal, Quinteros' second of the season, gave the Valiants an early 1-0 lead that they would never relinquish.
Hammerle increased the lead to 2-0 in the 53rd minute when he cut past a Colonials defender and fired a shot inside of the right post. With the lead stretched to 2-0, the Valiants were able to play defensively the remainder of the competition to earn the win.
Junior goalkeeper
Willie Silber (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) played an outstanding game in goal for the Valiants, turning away all eight shots he faced on the day for his first shutout of the season and third of his career. Silber's effort in goal dwarfed Wilkes' goalkeeper Kyle Romm, who finished with only three saves on five shots.
The Valiants have a decent layover as they will practice all week in preparation for the final match of the regular season next Saturday against King's (Pa.), when the team will honor their graduating players with Senior Day while also hoping to secure a spot in the Freedom Conference Tournament.
