MANSFIELD, Conn. – Hailey Lehning accounted for both Eastern Connecticut State University tallies with a goal and an assist as the Warriors defeated the Manhattanville College women's soccer team by a 2-0 score in the Valiants' 2014 non-conference finale on Wednesday night at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex.
The first good chance of the night came from Manhattanville (2-14-1), coming on the team's only shot of the opening half. Junior
Dani Sullivan (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) took a chance from distance in the fourth minute, only to see the shot carom off the crossbar and out.
Eastern Connecticut State (11-5-1) got the first goal of the night in the 27th minute, when Emily Becher took a Lehning pass near the top of the box and fired a shot off the hand of sprawling sophomore keeper
Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) and into the top corner for the score.
Diemicke finished the first half with three saves to keep the match close, including a point-blank save to deny Becher from six yards away in the 19th minute.
After playing the playmaker role on the first score, Lehning became the scorer herself in the 53rd minute when she converted a pass from Michele D'Agata for an insurance tally.
Eastern Connecticut finished the night with a 19-3 edge in shots. Diemicke made eight saves to again keep her team within striking distance throughout.
Manhattanville will close out the 2014 season at home on Saturday, as the Valiants honor their four graduating seniors with Senior Day before a 1 p.m. matchup with King's (Pa.) College at GoValiants.com Field.
