PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville men's soccer team scored three goals in the last 17 minutes of play to defeat the Delaware Valley Aggies by the score of 3-0 in the Freedom Conference opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Keio Academy Field.
The Valiants did not have their normal home field advantage as the weather forced play to the turf field at neighboring Keio Academy, but that didn't stop the home team drom controlling the contest from the outset. Freshman
Robin Schaufele (Kalix, Sweden/Kungsfaegeln) and sophomore
Ryan Kenny (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) both netted their first collegiate goals for Manhattanville and sophomore
Jamie Macchia (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) also scored in the win, in which the Valiants outshot their opponents bya 17-4 margin.
The tempestuous weather that riddled Purchase for the majority of the day managed to leave Purchase just as the match was set to begin, with the sun even making an appearance in the early minutes of the contest. With the conditions pleasant for the first time all day, Manhattanville controlled play in the first half and the Valiants defense continued to impress by preventing Delaware Valley from recording a single shot in the first. Macchia nearly put his team ahead with a rocket off the bottom of the crossbar in the 26th minute, but despite that and seven other shots the two teams went into halftime scoreless.
It seemed to be that type of day for Manhattanville in the second half when a nice header by junior
Eddie Silber (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) was cleared off the goal line by DelVal's Alex Wilson. But the Valiants finally broke through in the 74th minute when Schaufele - who had had a goal called back earlier in the game due to offsides - beat a defender to a cross off the foot of junior
Kevin O'Reilly (Stamford, Conn./Trinity Catholic) and beat the keeper low to the corner for his first collegiate goal.
Kenny also scored his first goal of the season three minutes later when he headed home a cross from sophomore Jesper Hjalm (Stockholm, Sweden/Huddingegymnasiet) on a set piece in the 77th minute. The Valiant sophomores weren't done there, as Macchia tallied his second goal of the year by taking advantage of a miscommunication between the Aggies goalkeeper and defender.Junior goalkeeper
Steve Singson (Deer Park, N.Y./St. Anthony's) was perfect in goal, extending his shutout streak to 143 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal by making two saves.
The win brings Manhattanville's record to 5-6 on the season, and a perfect 1-0 in Freedom Conference play. The Valiants will play host to a very talented Montclair State team, this Wednesday, October 8, at 6 p.m.
