GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Manhattanville College women's volleyball team dropped two matches at the annual Middle Atlantic Conference Crossover Tournament, falling in straight sets to both Hood College and Arcadia University on Saturday afternoon at Arcadia's Alumni Gym.
Freshman
Meagan Dattoma (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) was Manhattanville's top offensive player with 10 kills, followed closely by classmate
Kerry Mackey (Smithtown, N.Y./Christ the King) with nine and junior
Allison Regan (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) with eight.
Manhattanville ran into a hot-hitting Hood squad in its first match of the day, as the Blazers recorded 43 kills compared to just 24 for the Valiants in a 3-0 (26-24, 25-19, 25-19) victory.
Regan led the Valiants with six kills, followed by sophomore
Alissa Primavera (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) with five. Seniors
Alyssa Casino (Rye Brook, N.Y./Maria Regina) and
Veronica Ferreiras (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Malverne) led the squad with 13 digs apiece, with Ferreiras coming one assist short of a double-double and also adding five aces.
Manhattanville had its best chance to take control of the match in the first set, which featured 14 ties and seven lead changes. With the match tied at 20, a Hood error and back-to-back kills by Regan put the Valiants up 23-20, but the Blazers closed the frame on a 6-1 run to take control of the match.
The Valiants also struggled to find consistent offense in the second match of the day against the host Knights, hitting .095 as Arcadia pulled away with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-23) victory.
Dattoma led the team with six kills in this match, followed by Mackey with five kills and .217 hitting. Sophomore
Megan Quinabo (Pearl City, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama) almost had the double-double against the Knights, leading the team with 14 assists and adding nine digs.
Arcadia's Natalie Cadmus almost single-handedly bested Manhattanville in the kill department, recording 22 on 53 attempts compared to 23 for the Valiant team. Colleen Stengel also had 10 kills for the home team.
Manhattanville will return to Freedom Conference play on Tuesday, when the Valiants look to pull off the upset of nationally ranked Eastern in St. Davids, Pa. at 7 p.m.
