GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa.- The Manhattanville women's basketball team was able to hold on late against Haverford in the Gwynedd Mercy Tip Off Tournament consolation game, beating the Fords by a final score of 64-60 on Sunday afternoon.
Senior
Alyson Caiazzo (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Saviour) led Manhattanville (1-1) in scoring for the second consecutive game, tallying a game-high 25 points to go with seven rebounds and five assists in the win over Haverford (0-2). After averaging 21.5 PPG and 14 RPG in the tournament, Caiazzo garnered a spot on the All-Tournament team. Junior
Ashley Franklin (New Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) played a major role coming off the bench for the Valiants against the Fords, contributing 17 points and seven rebounds in 25 minutes of work.
For the Fords, three players finished in double figures, including a 21-point effort from Elizabeth Lynch. Haverford jumped out of the gate early, taking a 6-2 lead over the Valiants in the first two minutes of play. Manhattanville quickly answered the offensive pursuit of the Fords, going on a 18-4 run to go up 20-10 with 12:37 remaining in the first. During this run, the Valiants took advantage of second chance opportunities, scoring six points after grabbing three offensive boards.
Despite holding a 10-point lead, the Fords answered with a 15-2 run, taking back a lead at 25-22 with just over eight minutes remaining in the first half. Haverford led by as many as seven in the final minutes of the first half before holding a 35-30 edge at the half. Caiazzo and Franklin combined for 22 of the 30 first half points scored by the Valiants.
Manhattanville chipped away at its five-point deficit in the opening minutes of the second half, starting with a midrange jumper by Caiazzo under a minute in. After two free throws sunk by Caiazzo, the Valiants were suddenly within one point of the Fords two minutes into the second half. Freshman
Joiada Darnell (St. Albans, N.Y./Humanities and the Arts) collected the next four Manhattanville points, tying the ball game up at 38 with 16 minutes remaining.
The Fords continued to string together solid offensive possessions, taking a 45-42 lead with 14:06 left in the contest. Down by three, the Valiants answered, pulling together a 13-4 run and grabbing a six-point lead over the Fords with just over seven minutes remaining, 55-49. Haverford scored the next six points, tying the game up at 55 when it was Lynch connecting on a jump shot with 5:19 remaining. Headed into the final minutes of the game, the veterans of Manhattanville were able to close it out with big baskets by Caiazzo and classmate
Bri Pabon (Newington, Conn./Newington). The Valiants' defense smothered the Fords in the final moments of the contest, giving the Fords little chances to get any good looks at the basket. Manhattanville was able to hold on in the end, picking up its first win of the 2014-15 season by a final score of 64-60.
The Valiants will travel on Friday for their next game starting at 7 p.m. against Mount St. Mary. Live stats can be accessed via GoValiants.com.
