Women's Hockey Falls to #3/3 Elmira to Close Out Opening Weekend

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The women's hockey team lost the second game of the season on Sunday, falling to #3/3 Elmira College by a final score of 6-0 on the second and final day of the ECAC East/West Classic, hosted by Norwich University at Kreitzberg Arena.

In the second leg of a back-to-back with the nation's #1 and #3 teams, the Valiants may have felt some side effects of yesterday's loss to Plattsburgh State.  Falling behind 1-0 in the first period, the Valiants were unable to mount a comeback as the Soaring Eagles dominated every aspect of the game.

Going into the first intermission down only a goal, the Valiants gave up three second period goals and two in the third. Six different Elmira skaters scored in the win, with Phoebe Piku adding a pair of assists for a game-high three points.

Freshman Ekaterina Nikonova (Lybertcy, Russia/King's Edgehill School) had a difficult introduction to college hockey as she allowed six goals on 34 shots. Elmira's Kelcey Crawford registered only 15 saves on the way to the shutout.

The Valiants now have the week to prepare for first home game of the 2014-15 season, when Manhattanville kicks off ECAC East Conference play against Nichols College on Friday at 3 p.m. in the first Valiant contest at Playland Ice Casino in more than two years.
