ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Nazareth College forward Dominik Gabaj led all players with a goal and two assists as the Golden Flyers defeated Manhattanville College by a 5-0 score in ECAC West Conference men's hockey action on Friday night at Bill Gray's Regional Iceplex.
Five different players scored for Nazareth (3-2-1, 2-1-1 ECAC West) in the victory, with Gabaj the only player to record more than one point. Ben Blasko, Oliver Janzen, Rocky Gruttadauria and Julius Tamasy also scored for the Golden Flyers.
It was a long night for Manhattanville (1-3-1, 1-3-1 ECAC West) beginning with the very first shift of the night, which saw Blasko find the net from Gabaj and Matt Manzella just 22 seconds into the game. Nazareth scored twice more in the opening frame, with Gabaj assisting on Janzen's goal at 8:55 and then netting an unassisted power-play goal of his own with 2:54 remaining in the first period.
Manhattanville had a good response in the second period in terms of shots, putting 16 attempts on the net of Ed Zdolshek compared to just eight for the Golden Flyers on the goal of senior
Brian Fleming (Saint John, N.B./Northern Cyclones (AJHL)). But it was Nazareth getting the only goal of the frame from Tamasy at 10:54 to make it a four-goal game after two periods.
Gruttadauria added one more in the third period as Nazareth posted a 14-8 edge in shots the rest of the way. Fleming and Zdolshek both finished the night with 31 saves, as Nazareth ended the evening with a 36-31 lead in shots.
Manhattanville will take the rest of the weekend off before beginning nearly two months of non-conference play on Tuesday, when the Valiants host Western New England University at Playland Ice Casino beginning at 4 p.m.
