Box Score RYE, N.Y. - Senior goaltender
Kirsten Shaughnessy (Le Center, Minn./LeSueur-Henderson St. Peter) recorded her second consecutive shutout but it still wasn't enough to earn a victory as the Manhattanville College women's hockey team tied Castleton State, 0-0, in a key ECAC East Conference matchup on Friday night at Playland Ice Casino. Anchoring the Valiants, Shaughnessy turned away all 29 shots she faced, including five in overtime.
In a highly-anticipated matchup between two of the top teams in the ECAC East, both teams played conservatively in the opening period as neither side was willing to concede the first goal. Shaughnessy was mildly tested as she turned away the five shots she faced in the period, while Castleton goaltender Paula Stephens was impressive, making a couple of big saves including a glove save on sophomore Scotia Bellavance (Campbell River, B.C./Pacific Steelers) in the high slot.
While the second period was played to with a faster pace than the first, neither team was able to make an impact on the scoreboard. Stephens continued to turn away the Valiants, recording 10 saves in the second period, while Shaughnessy was the busier of the two, making 12 saves - including back-to-back stops on a 3-on-1 break.
Although the Spartans outshot the Valiants 12-6 over the final 25:00, including 5-0 in overtime, Shaughnessy continued to play large in net, making key save after key save. Everyone at Playland Ice Casino witnessed a true goaltender showdown.
The point picked up in the tie could play a big role in the Valiants' push for the playoffs as the season goes on. Two more points remain on the table as the Valiants look to finish their five-game homestand unbeaten when they take on USCHO.com and D3hockey.com #3 Norwich tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at Playland Ice Casino.
