NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior assistant captain
Jake Mooney (Toronto, Ont./North York Rangers (OPJHL)) scored twice as the Manhattanville College men's hockey team jumped out to a three-goal lead and held on in the waning minutes to pull out a 4-3 victory over Connecticut College in non-conference action on Tuesday night at Dayton Arena.
Mooney is the third Valiant to record a multi-goal game in the last four outings after potting his first two goals of the season, and he was helped by sophomore
Teagan Waugh (Nanaimo, B.C./Powell River Kings (BCHL)) registering a game-high three points on a goal and two assists. Junior
Matt Coleman (Brentwood, N.Y./Springfield Pics (EJHL)) also scored once with an assist for Manhattanville (4-4-1) in the win.
Tim DiPretoro also scored twice late in the contest for Connecticut College (1-5-1), which attempted a late comeback only to come up a goal short.
Mooney opened the scoring 6:58 into the first period, scoring one second after the Valiants killed off the first power-play chance of the evening. The senior was assisted by Waugh in helping the visitors to an early lead.
After Connecticut College's Mike Martinez evened the score in the second period, the Valiants scored twice in 23 seconds late in the frame to take a 3-1 lead after two. It was Mooney again giving Manhattanville a lead at the 16:26 mark off assists from sophomore
Nolan Marshall (Drumheller, Alta./Camrose Kodiaks (AJHL)) and junior
Paul Allan Bamberg (Lulea, Sweden/Lulea HF J20 (SWE)), and Coleman followed with a goal of his own on the next shift from Waugh and freshman
Anthony Ragone (Babylon, N.Y./Springfield Pics (USPHL)).
Waugh made it a 4-1 game with 7:34 remaining in the third period with his third goal of the year, coming on the man advantage from Coleman. All three of the sophomore's scores have been while on the power play this season.
The goal came in very handy after Connecticut College mounted a late comeback, getting a power-play goal from DiPretoro at 17:46 and then an extra-attacker tally from DiPretoro again 72 seconds later to make it a one-goal game.
Despite the two late goals, senior
Brian Fleming (Saint John, N.B./Northern Cyclones (AJHL)) still picked up his fourth win of the year by making 23 saves on 26 shots. Tim Cooney suffered the loss for the Camels, allowing all four goals on 29 attempts.
Manhattanville will be back at Playland Ice Casino for the final two games of 2014 this weekend, beginning on Friday night with a non-conference matchup with SUNY Canton starting at 7 p.m.
