Box Score STAMFORD, Conn. - The Manhattanville women's hockey team played their second consecutive overtime game on Saturday night, this time earning a point as they tied the Beacons of UMass Boston by a final score of 1-1. Freshman forward
Emma Rucinski (Rochester, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds) scored the first goal of her collegiate career to give the Valiants their only goal on the day.
This was the second meeting between these two teams this season with Manhattanville winning the first game 4-2. This match was much more evenly contested as great goaltending from junior goaltender Kirsten Shaughnessy (Le Center, Minn./LeSueur-Henderson St. Peter) and UMass Boston's junior goaltender Moe Bradley kept both teams from capitalizing on numerous chances.
The first period was a lot of back-and-forth hockey with only nine total shots being recorded in the period, six to three in favor of Manhattanville. Both teams were very solid in the defensive zone , blocking numerous shots before they had the chance to reach goal.
The second period saw a total of 18 shots on net with both teams converting. Alla Traun (Edina, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds (JWHL)), finding Rucinski crashing towards goal, served up a beautiful pass which Rucinski buried into the back of the net for her first goal as a Valiant. Rucinksi's aggressive nature and feverish style of play has been a huge boost for the Valiants since she made her return from a concussion and it finally paid off as she got the Valiants on the board first at the 15:03 mark of the second period.
UMass Boston continued battling and eventual tied the game with just 2:22 remaining in the second period, as their leading goal scorer Samantha Fallon, burying home a rebound off a Shaughnessy save, tallied her thirteenth of the season and evened the game at 1-1.
Despite a hard-fought third period and overtime, neither team was able to separate themselves from the other. The game ended in a 1-1 draw with both teams picking up a point and Manhattanville remaining two points ahead of the Beacons in the standings.
The Valiants have a very tough four games remaining on the season as they take on the first-place Norwich University Cadets next Friday at Terry Conners Rink in Stamford. The push for the playoffs is in full-swing and with the goaltending situation seemingly locked up by Kirsten Shaughnessy (Le Center, Minn./LeSueur-Henderson St. Peter), who turned away 19 of 20 tonight, it will be the Valiants offensive production which will determine how deep into the playoffs they go.
