Women's Hockey Eliminated in ECAC East Quarterfinal Loss to UMass Boston

Box Score STAMFORD, Conn. - The fourth-seeded Manhattanville women's hockey team was eliminated from the ECAC East Conference Tournament after falling by a 3-0 score to fifth-seeded UMass Boston in the quarterfinal round on Saturday night at Terry Conners Rink.  Despite 29 saves from junior goaltender Kirsten Shaughnessy (Le Center, Minn./LeSueur-Henderson St. Peter), the Valiants were only able to generate 17 shots on goal, none of which found the back of the net.

Manhattanville (8-14-4) came into the playoffs seeded fourth in the ECAC East Tournament.  After winning the season series against the Beacons, the Valiants were awarded home-ice advantage against a very equally matched UMass Boston team.

The first period saw lots of back and forth action with both teams trading shots and scoring opportunities.  It wasn't until the 15:41 mark of the first period that the Beacons were able to get on the board.  After a misplaced drop pass gave UMass Boston possession in the offensive zone, the Beacons' Kayla Kiernan picked up the puck along the goal line and moved it to the low slot where Kelsey MacIsaac fired a puck through the legs of Shaughnessy, making it 1-0.

The Beacons took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission in addition to a 12-8 edge in shots.  After a scoreless second period in which the Valiants only recorded four shots, UMass Boston skated into the third period still with the one-goal lead.

For most of the third period the Beacons played dump and chase hockey, looking to milk as much time off the clock as possible.  The Valiants battled to find scoring opportunities but were unable to capitalize. A miscommunication between Shaughnessy and her defense put the Beacons were up 2-0 with 12:28 remaining, when Katie Loiselle was credited with her seventh goal of the year. With Manhattanville pressing to get back into the game on a late four-on-four, Kat Armstrong scored an empty-net goal for the Beacons with less than a minute remaining to put the game away for good.

Despite a rough season this year, the Valiants will return all but one player to the squad for next season, as only senior Caitlyn Beauvais (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia/Pacific Steelers (JWHL)) has her collegiate career come to an end with the loss.
