Women's Hockey Unable to Upset #4/4 Norwich, Falls 5-1

Box Score STAMFORD, Conn. - Heading into the third period down 1-0 to the first-place Cadets, the Valiants were unable to pull off the upset victory, falling by a final score of 5-1. Junior captain Rachael Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn./Sound Shore Warriors (MAWHL)) picked up her second goal of the season on a power play opportunity.

Norwich University arrived at Terry Conners Rink with an eight-game win-streak under their belts and pushed the streak to nine, thanks in large part to junior forward Vanessa Champagne picking up her first two goals of the season.

The first goal, coming at the 14:00 mark of the first period, came on the power play as junior forward Kaycie Anderson tipped home a shot from the point which then bounced high in the air and fortuitously landed behind Manhattanville junior goaltender Kirsten Shaughnessy (Le Center, Minn./LeSueur-Henderson St. Peter) to put the Cadets ahead 1-0.

In the second period Manhattanville had their fair share of chances. With just over 15 minutes remaining in the period, the Valiants forced a two quick penalties to give them a 5-on-3 power play for 1:54 seconds. Despite firing shots towards goal, no one was able to get the puck past Norwich goaltender Taylor Fairchild who turned away 11 of the 12 shots she faced.

Junior forward Alla Traun (Edina, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds (JWHL)) had the closest opportunity of the period, entering the zone with fellow junior forward Michele Meggiolaro (Whippany, N.J./New Jersey Colonials (MAWHA)) on a 2-on-1, Traun fired a shot over the shoulder of Fairchild which rang off the crossbar.

The Valiants dominated the second period and entered the third in prime position to steal a victory from the Cadets. The momentum did not last long for the Valiants as junior forward Aubrey Bachand (Harwichport, Mass./Vermont Academy) took a retaliatory tripping penalty which the Cadets converted on, just 23 seconds into the power play, as Champagne tipped home defenseman Taylor Cross' shot from the point.

The Cadets scored again five minutes later, this time Madyson Moore put home a rebound after Shaughnessy made the save on the initial shot from the point.

The Valiants rebounded, however, as Morrison picked up the power play goal with 9:21 remaining in the third, making the score 3-1. That was as close as the Valiants would get, as the Cadets tallied two goals late in the third to close out the game, 5-1.

The Valiants will need to put this loss past them and get ready for another ECAC East conference matchup as they will take on the Purple Knights of Saint Michael's tomorrow afternoon at 4 PM.
