Two Goals in Two Minutes Send Western New England Past Women's Soccer

Box Score WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Western New England University scored two goals less than 97 seconds apart in the second half to open up a scoreless game on the way to a 3-0 victory over Manhattanville College in a non-conference women's soccer matchup at Eastern Connecticut State's Warrior Classic on Sunday afternoon at the Mansfield Athletic Complex.

Manhattanville did not get many good offensive chances over the first 45 minutes of the match, but still went into the break knotted up at zero thanks to the play of sophomore Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge). The keeper turned aside all five of the shots the Golden Bears put on target during the frame, keeping the squad at bay.

WNEU could not be held off the scoreboard forever, however, scoring twice in two minutes early in the second half to take the lead. Emma Norden opened the scoring in the 52nd minute, taking the ball down the right side and picking the far corner. Then in the 54th minute, junior Grace Kraemer (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) knocked down a cross from Becca Mercieri but Alicia Lewis was there to put the ball home for a two-goal lead.

The shots on goal were even the rest of the way at two apiece until a late WNE penalty kick swayed the balance and also gave the team its third goal of the afternoon. The final shots were 15-3 in favor of the Golden Bears.

Kraemer (0-2-0) suffered the loss for the Valiants despite making three saves on five shots in over 40 minutes of action in the second half. Freshman Julianna Browne (Dover Plains, N.Y./Dover) played the final 4:40 and ceded the score from the penalty spot.

Manhattanville will return to action on Friday, when the squad heads back to GoValiants.com Field to take on Ramapo under the Friday night lights beginning at 7 p.m.
