Men's Hockey Splits Season Series with Elmira After 5-2 Defeat

PINE VALLEY, N.Y. – Elmira College's Tommy Sumi recorded four points on two goals and two assists to lead the Soaring Eagles to a 5-2 victory over Manhattanville College in an ECAC West Conference matchup on Saturday night at the Murray Athletic Center.

In addition to Sumi's four-point night, Jarryd ten Vaanholt registered three assists and linemate Michael Collins had a goal and an assist to help Elmira (9-6-3, 3-3-2 ECAC West) to the win and the season split with the Valiants.

Freshman Stephen Gaul (Downers Grove, Ill./Springfield Pics (USPHL)) continued his Rookie of the Year campaign with another goal and sophomore Nolan Marshall (Drumheller, Alta./Camrose Kodiaks (AJHL)) also scored for Manhattanville (7-7-4, 2-5-1 ECAC West), while sophomore Tanner Hicks (Calgary, Alta./Brooks Bandits (AJHL)) chipped in with a pair of assists for the visitors as well.

After Manhattanville provided the late-game heroics on Friday night, Elmira jumped out to an early lead on the second shift of the game thanks to Sumi's fifth goal of the year just 51 seconds into the game. That was all the scoring to come from the opening 20 minutes, which featured a potent Valiant attack that peppered EC netminder Ryan deMelo with 18 shots.

The Valiants fired 17 more shots on deMelo's net in the second period, but again it was Elmira finding the only goal of the frame. This time it was Collins who beat junior Kurt Williams (Rocky Mountain House, Alta./Salmon Arm Silverbacks (BCHL)) at the 7:50 mark and gave his team a two-goal edge headed into the third period.

Gaul got Manhattanville on the board less than three minutes into the final stanza, scoring his seventh of the year from Hicks and senior co-captain Jake Mooney (Toronto, Ont./North York Rangers (OPJHL)). With his goal, Gaul continues to lead all ECAC West rookies in scoring this season, pacing all conference newcomers with his seven goals and 14 points so far in 2014-15.

However, the one-goal deficit lasted less than a minute as a Valiant penalty led to a power-play goal from Alexander Taulien at the 3:50 mark.

Down by three in the waning minutes, Marshall made it a 4-2 game with 1:09 on the clock with his fourth of the year. However, that only gave the visitors the push to empty its net in hopes of a comeback, and Carter Shinkaruk responded with an empty-net tally 17 seconds later to provide for the final score.

Williams made a career-high 33 saves between the pipes for Manhattanville, but still suffered his first collegiate defeat. At the other end, deMelo was pressured all night long by the Valiants but responded well, turning aside 47 of the 49 shots to come his way.

After going 2-2-1 on its five-game road swing, Manhattanville will play five of its final seven games of the regular season at Playland Ice Casino, beginning next weekend with two crucial games against Utica College on Friday and Saturday night at 7 p.m.
