Women's Hockey Skates to 1-1 Draw with New England College

RYE, N.Y. - After an overtime battle yesterday evening, the Manhattanville College women's hockey team again needed more than 60 minutes on Saturday afternoon at Playland Ice Casino, skating to a 1-1 (ot) tie against New England College. The tie brings Manhattanville to 6-7-5 overall with a 4-3-3 record in ECAC East play.

The Valiants offense continued its dominance on Saturday. Less than 24 hours after recording 45 shots on Plymouth State, the Valiants outshot the Pilgrims, 38-15. In a scoreless first period, Manhattanville outshot New England College 9-2, while controlling all three zones of the ice.

After outshooting the Pilgrims 20-3 in the second period, the teams headed to the third period scoreless. Dinkins came the closest to finding the net, hitting the post on an opportunity in the low slot with less than five minutes in the second. New England College's Lauren Hopps, who was great on the day, turned away 37 of the 38 shots she faced.

The game got a little more even in the third as both teams registered seven shots on goal in the period. The Valiants drew first blood when Dinkins crashed the goal and tipped home the rebound on a slapshot from freshman Cassandra Kent (Lake Placid, NY/Northwood), giving the Valiants a 1-0 lead with only 9:19 remaining in the game.

With just under five minutes to go in the game, forward Ashley Bonner pulled off a tremendous individual effort, stick handling through multiple Valiants before putting a shot on freshman goaltender Ekaterina Nikonova (Lybertcy, Russia/King's Edgehill School). Although Nikonova made the initial save, Bonner crashed the goal and put in her own rebound to tie the game at one.

The teams finished the game exchanging opportunities with neither side being able to distinguish itself as the victor. The Valiants will take the ice again next Friday at UMass Boston before playing Nichols College on Saturday.
