BURRILLVILLE, R.I. - For the second time in as many days, the Manhattanville women's hockey team pulled off third period comeback, this time beating the Bison of Nichols College by a final score of 5-2. Sophomore
Taryn Harris (Morrison, Colo./Colorado Selects) scored her second game-winning goal of the weekend, scoring the go-ahead goal just two minutes into the third period.
After the teams played to a scoreless first period, it was Nichols who would get on the board first. Just 1:34 into the second period senior Jordan Fencl picked up her first goal of the season, beating freshman goaltender
Ekaterina Nikonova (Lybertcy, Russia/King's Edgehill School).
Fencl would pick up her second point of the game when she assisted on Grace Murphy's goal with 8:50 remaining in the second period. The goal gave the Bison a 2-0 lead which was quickly cut to 2-1 when
Sydney Asselstine (Hartington, Ontario/Nepean Wildcats (PWHL)) scored her fifth goal of the season after nice build-up play from fellow seniors
Alla Traun (Edina, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds (JWHL)) and
Michele Meggiolaro (Whippany, N.J./New Jersey Colonials (MAWHA)).
Trailing 2-1 entering the third period, the Valiants scored three goals in a four-minute span. Just 1:04 into the period
Aubrey Bachand (Harwichport, Mass./Vermont Academy) tallied a power-play while Meggiolaro added her second assist of the game.
The Valiants would go right back on the power play when Murphy was called for a hooking penalty just 39 second after the goal. 17 seconds into the power play
Taryn Harris (Morrison, Colo./Colorado Selects) blasted home a shot from the point after good puck movement between freshmen
Sarah Sinning (Southold, NY/National Sports Academy) and
Maeve O'Brien (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) opened up the shooting lane for the sophomore.
Playing with the lead, and the momentum, Meggiolaro padded the Valiants lead scoring her eighth goal of the season just three minutes later. With a 4-2 lead and just 14:53 remaining in the third, Manhattanville closed the game out with impressive play in both ends and good goaltending from Nikonova, who finished the day with 25 saves on 27 shots.
Sophomore
Jerin Dinkins (Grants Pass, Ore./National Sports Academy) put the game away for good when she scored an empty netter with :24 seconds remaining. The Valiants proved to be serious competitors this weekend, battling back from multi-goal deficits in each game.
The win moves Manhattanville to 6-3-3 in ECAC East competition. The Valiants resume action next Friday when they take on the Salve Regina Seahawks in Newport, R.I.
