Valiants Fall to Holy Cross in Rutland Herald Opener, 7-2

RUTLAND, VT. - The Manhattanville women's hockey team dropped to 4-5-3 on the season following Friday night's 7-2 loss to Holy Cross. Junior defender Mackenzie Boardman led the way for the Crusaders, picking up two goals and two assists on the night.

The Crusaders got out to an early lead after junior defender Mackenzie Boardman scored her second goal of the season just 3:39 into play. Holy Cross doubled its lead at the 15:06 mark when Boardman fed a pass to Mary Klimasewiski who beat senior goaltender Kirsten Shaughnessy (Le Center, Minn./LeSueur-Henderson St. Peter) for her seventh goal of the season.

Unfortunately, it only got worse for the Valiants in the second period. Holy Cross would put in three more goals, including Boardman's second of the game, before Manhattanville senior Alla Traun (Edina, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds (JWHL)) scored her third goal of the season, cutting the deficit to 5-1.

The Crusaders would score two more goal in the third while captain Rachael Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn./Sound Shore Warriors (MAWHL)) scored her second goal of the season, a power play goal, with assists coming from Aubrey Bachand (Harwichport, Mass./Vermont Academy) and Michele Meggiolaro (Whippany, N.J./New Jersey Colonials (MAWHA)).

Sophomore goaltender Olivia Drew (York, Maine/Portland Jr. Pirates) played well in her relief appearance, stopping 15 of 17 shots that came her way. Holy Cross goaltender Krista Manzanares was solid in between the pipes turning away 23 of the 25 shots she faced on the evening.

Manhattanville will now play Castleton State tomorrow at noon. The Spartans lost 4-1 to the same Stevenson team the Valiants beat 2-1 on Tuesday. The Crusaders will play Stevenson for the Rutland-Herald Invitational Championship tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 PM.
