PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College field hockey team struggled to get in an offensive groove Sunday afternoon as they suffered a 4-1 setback to Connecticut College in their final non-conference matchup of the season.
Connecticut College jumped out to an early lead, when Jamie Navoni tipped in a pass from Gabby Peterson in the 11th minute to give the Camels (4-9 overall) a 1-0 advantage. The Camels added to that lead in the 22nd minute when Heidi Halsted fired a shot off of a penalty corner that beat sophomore
Kaitlin Halloran (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) inside the left post.
The Valiants were able to generate just one shot on goal for the afternoon, but were able to capitalize on it. Freshman
Nicole Fanelle (Burlington, N.J./Burlington Township) took a pass on a restart from sophomore
Melissa Stys (Pequannock, N.J./Kent School) inside the shooting circle and beat Connecticut goalkeeper Lauren Pianucci on the near post for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
Manhattanville earned a penalty corner just two minutes after the goal and looked to be gaining some momentum on the offensive end. Junior
Bregje Smits (Bussum, Netherlands/Willen de Zwigger College) fired a shot that was blocked and cleared out by the Camel defense. Connecticut took the 2-1 advantage into the break and never looked back.
The Camels tacked on two late goals by Halsted and Meghan Lembo to put the game out of reach.
Manhattanville will look to get back on the winning track this week when they play host to conference foe DeSales University in a MAC Freedom matchup. That game is scheduled for Wednesday, October 21 at 4:00 P.M.
