DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – Senior
Steve Singson (Deer Park, N.Y./St. Anthony's), sophomore
Robin Schaufele (Kalix, Sweden/Kungsfaegeln) and freshman
Oskar Martinsson (Orust, Sweden/Uddevalla Gymnasieskola) all recorded multi-goal games as the Manhattanville College men's soccer team remained in the hunt for a MAC Freedom Tournament berth with a decisive 8-0 victory over Delaware Valley University on Saturday night at Lipinski Field.
The win keeps Manhattanville (8-5-4, 2-1-3 MAC Freedom) in the hunt for a conference tournament berth, as the Valiants sit in fifth place, one point back of third-place King's (Pa.) College and Misericordia University with one match to go. To make the postseason, the Valiants need a win next Saturday against Wilkes University and either a loss by FDU-Florham, or a loss or tie by Misericordia.
It was a scoring bonanza for the Valiants on Saturday, with the team putting up the most goals in a game since an 8-1 win over NYU Poly on September 16, 2009. It is also the largest shutout victory by a Valiant side since an 11-0 whitewashing of York (N.Y.) College on October 4, 2004.
Schaufele led the way for Manhattanville with a career-high five points, scoring twice and adding an assist. Singson and Martinsson both recorded their second career two-goal games for the Valiants, while sophomore
Christoffer Staahl (Lulea, Sweden/Kungsfaegeln) netted his first of the year and freshman
Luis Gil (São Paulo, Brazil/Colégio Augusto Laranja) scored his first collegiate goal as well.
Meanwhile, at the other end of the field the Valiants recorded their fourth straight shutout, as senior
Willie Silber (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) and freshman
Markus Schwarz (Vienna, Austria/Al Bateen Secondary School) extended the team's scoreless streak to 469:22, the third-longest streak in program history. Silber made four saves in 74:50 to earn the win, while Schwarz came on for the final 15-plus minutes and did not need to make a stop.
Singson got the scoring started in the 20th minute by scoring from the penalty spot, and then added his second of the match with exactly 10 minutes to go in the half, with the assist going to Schaufele. The Swedish sophomore got on the board himself just 68 seconds later, going in on a breakaway and beating Austin Brotman.
The Valiants closed the game strongly in the second half, scoring on five of their nine shots and not allowing the Aggies a shot of their own. Martinsson scored twice in less than eight minutes early in the half with Staahl's first of the year sandwiched in between, followed later in the frame by Schaufele's second and Gil's first in the 70th and 80th minutes, respectively.
"This was a professional performance tonight," said head coach
Gregg Miller. "We stepped up a gear in the second half, which was good to see because sometimes in games like this the effort can go the other way. We never looked in any discomfort during the game, and I was glad to see some of the younger guys get into the game to earn some valuable experience."
Manhattanville has only one game left on the schedule, and it is the biggest one of the year as the Valiants will honor their four seniors and also look to keep their careers going next Saturday at 3:30 p.m. against Wilkes at GoValiants.com Field.
"We have a week to get ourselves prepared for next Saturday," Miller added. "We need to take care of what we can take care of and let the rest play out."
