PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College field hockey team played solid defensively, but were unable to hold off a strong offensive attack from FDU-Florham on senior night, dropping their final regular season matchup 1-0.
The Valiants (6-13 overall, 1-6 MAC Freedom) were looking to pick up a win on senior night and played a very solid game against the Devils (13-5 overall, 6-1 MAC Freedom), but were unable to take advantage of their opportunities on the offensive end. Junior
Bregje Smits (Bussum, Netherlands/Willen de Zwigger College) was able to record the only shot on goal for the Valiants on the evening, but Manhattanville had several other promising attacks fizzle out.
FDU applied pressure on the offensive end throughout the entire game, earning 13 penalty corners and forced sophomore goalkeeper
Kaitlin Halloran (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) to make a season-high seven saves to keep the game scoreless. The Valiant corner defense was exceptional on the night, successfully defending the first 12 penalty corners they faced. It took 62 minutes, but the Devils finally broke through on penalty corner number 13, when Kim Davis scored her conference leading 18th goal of the season, deflecting in a shot from Stephanie Geskes.
The Valiants had a great opportunity to tie the game late, earning a penalty corner in the final minute. Smits received a pass at the top of the circle and fired a shot that missed just left of the cage on what turned out to be Manhattanville's final opportunity of the night.
Seniors
Rylee McGuire (Grantham, N.H./Lebanon) and
Morgan Parsons (Bear, Del./William Penn) rounded out their careers by cementing their place in the Valiant record books. The classmates both finished tied for ninth place all-time in career games played with 75 appearances. In addition, McGuire finishes her career ranked third in program history in goals (38) and points (98). The Valiants will also graduate senior
