PURCHASE, N.Y. – Sophomore
Asia Reid (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Nellie A. Thornton High School) led all players with 10 kills and a .471 hitting percentage to lead Manhattanville College to a decisive 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-7) victory over Wilkes University in a MAC Freedom women's volleyball matchup on Senior Night at Kennedy Gymnasium.
The win moves Manhattanville (17-9, 2-5 MAC Freedom) into sole possession of sixth place in the MAC Freedom standings at the conclusion of the regular season, one match ahead of seventh-place Wilkes (12-22, 1-6 MAC Freedom).
The Valiants honored lone senior
Allison Regan (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) before the match, and the senior responded well in her first match since October 10, putting down five kills and adding two blocks and two digs. Sophomore
Meagan Dattoma (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) came close to a double-double with nine kills and eight digs, while junior
Megan Quinabo (Pearl City, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama) registered her 14th double-double of the season with a match-high 23 assists and a team-best 21 digs, along with four aces and three kills.
For the match, Manhattanville put down 36 kills with 14 errors with a .186 hitting percentage, in addition to nine service aces. Wilkes, meanwhile, hit negatively on the night with 20 kills and 25 errors.
The Valiants jumped on the Lady Colonels early in the first set, scoring 11 of the first 13 points, but the visitors battled back, eventually knotting the score at 16 following a Valiant error. Manhattanville settled down eventually, however, out-scoring Wilkes 9-3 the rest of the way to end the frame, with Dattoma serving up back-to-back aces to clinch the set.
Manhattanville scored four straight points early in the middle stanza to take an 8-4 lead, and the Valiants were never threatened the rest of the way in taking a 2-0 lead. Reid had five kills on eight errorless attacks in the set, which saw 11 kills for the Valiants and 12 errors for the Lady Colonels.
The home team then closed out the match with a dominant third set. Quinabo began with four aces during an eight-point start to the set that put the Valiants ahead early, and Manhattanville never looked back. Quinabo had two kills, seven assists and eight digs in addition to her four aces, as the Valiants put down 11 kills and limited Wilkes to just one in the final frame.
Manhattanville finishes the regular season with a 17-9 record, tying the 2013 squad for the most wins by a Valiant side since 2000, while the .654 winning percentage would also be the best for the program since 2000's 21-11 team and the sixth-highest overall in program history. The Valiants' season might not be over, however, as the team awaits a possible bid to the ECAC Metro Championships in mid-November.
