PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's soccer team rolled past Medgar Evers College Tuesday afternoon 7-0 in a non-conference matchup.
The Cougars (0-10 overall) were forced to play with just eight players on the field due to roster issues, allowing the Valiants (4-5 overall) to explode for seven goals in the first half. With the Cougars forced to run a two-defenseman back line, the Valiants were able to break through on multiple occasions, registering 21 shots in the half.
Senior forward
Christie DeMarco (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream South) got the scoring started for Manhattanville in the 6th minute, when fellow senior
Nicolette Diodati (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) found her on a nice through ball to lead to a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper. Demarco was able to beat Cougar goalkeeper Marlene Thompson on the near post to put the Valiants up 1-0.
Less than a minute later, junior
Kerri Durkin (Mahopac, N.Y./John F. Kennedy Catholic) dribbled through the defensive line for another one-on-one situation with Thompson, beating her on the far post to extend the lead. In the 8th minute, Diodati found Demarco again at the top of the box, leading to the senior finding the back of the net for her second goal of the afternoon.
In the 16th minute, Diodatti this time found senior
Dani Sullivan (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) at the top of the box and Sullivan buried a shot from 20 yards for her second goal of the season. The Valiants tacked on three more goals to end the half, beginning with the first career goal for senior
Christie Freer (Southington, Conn./Southington). The Connecticut native broke through the defensive line at midfield, and carried the ball into the box before beating Thompson on the left post to make it a 5-0 lead for Manhattanville.
Less than a minute later, freshman
Karen Garces (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) would score her first collegiate goal as well, taking a pass just outside the box from Durkin and firing a shot into the back of the net. At the end of the half, DeMarco tacked on her third goal of the afternoon, when junior
Alex Carlbom (Gothenburg, Sweden/Kents Hill School) found her in the middle of the box on a pass from the goal line.
In the second half, the Valiants possessed the ball without attacking as to not run up the score on the Cougars in a game that was cut short by the officials. With the win, Manhattanville improved to 4-5 overall for the season, picking up an important win before facing a very strong Trinity (
Conn.) College team Thursday afternoon. That matchup will be held at GoValiants.com Field, with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 P.M.
