PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College men's soccer team suffered a 2-0 setback Wednesday afternoon, dropping a non-conference matchup to regionally ranked Stevens Institute of Technology.
The Valiants (6-5-1 overall) and Ducks (8-1-2 overall) battled throughout the first half, with neither team able to find the back of the net. Manhattanville had the first chance of the afternoon, when senior
Eddie Silber (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) headed a corner kick from junior
Jesper Hjalm (Stockholm, Sweden/Huddingegymnasiet) just wide of the target. The Valiants also had a promising opportunity in the 20th minute, drawing a foul just outside the penalty box near the goal line, but were unable to capitalize.
Manhattanville's senior goalkeeper
Willie Silber (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) made two great saves at the end of the half to keep the game scoreless. In the 38th minute, Andrew Masur found space from 14 yards out and fired a rocket that Silber was able to deflect wide of the net. Just a minute later, Joe Cellitti fired a shot from the top of the 18, but was turned away on a great diving save by Silber.
The Ducks got out to a great start in the second half, forcing a turnover deep in their defensive end of the field, and began a counter-attack the other direction. After working the ball downfield, Matteo Sturla found Collin Phillips on a cross, and Phillips was able to head one past Silber inside the far post to give Stevens a 1-0 advantage.
Stevens put the game out of reach in the 79th minute when Cellitti found Carson Pryor inside the box. Pryor beat Silber with a shot inside the right post to make it a 2-0 game.
The Valiants struggled to get any offensive momentum going, managing just two shots on goal on the afternoon. Manhattanville will look to bounce back from the loss on Saturday, when they travel to King's College (Pa.) for a MAC Freedom showdown. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 P.M.
