Men's Hoops Drops Final Game of 2015 to Hot-Shooting CCNY

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Manhattanville College ran into a hot-shooting City College of New York squad on Wednesday afternoon, as the Beavers shot 58.8 percent from the field and saw six players score double figures in a 106-85 victory over the Valiants in non-conference men's basketball action at Nat Holman Gymnasium.

The visitors did not shoot badly, connecting on 30 of 62 shots (48.4 percent) from the field and an impressive 11-of-23 (47.8 percent) effort from beyond the arc. Senior Anthony Maestre (Bronx, N.Y./Mount St. Michael Academy) led four Valiants in double figures with 14 points, followed by classmate Andrew Winter (Queens, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) with a season-high 13 points off the bench. Senior Juan Camacho (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/New Horizons) added 11 points and sophomore Dom Arena (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) chipped in 10 as well for Manhattanville (6-5).

CCNY (6-4) featured a balanced scoring attack, led by Khalil Hamer with 17 points to go with seven assists and five rebounds. Ram Chadha and David Solano added 14 points apiece, while Robert Dionisio and Darius Rhodes scored 13 each as well for the home team.

City College jumped on the Valiants early in Manhattanville's first game in two weeks, scoring 13 of the first 15 points to earn a 13-2 lead 3:45 into the contest. The Beaver lead grew to as many as 21 on four occasions in the first half, the last coming with 1:48 left before the Valiants closed on an 8-2 run behind a pair of Maestre threes to slice the deficit to 15 (54-39) at the break.

Maestre scored all 14 of his points in the first half to lead all scorers before having his minutes limited in the second half, while CCNY as a team shot 63.9 percent (23 of 36) over the first 20 minutes to assert itself offensively.

The Valiants got no closer in the second half, as Hamer started the frame with a three-pointer and the Beavers never allowed the visitors back in the game. Sophomore Kes Adjekughele (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) had four of his team-best six rebounds and Winter netted 12 of his 13 points in the second half, as many players got some good playing time and 11 different Valiants had at least one field goal in the frame.

Manhattanville will return to action after the New Year on January 3, when the Valiants welcome Hunter College to Kennedy Gymnasium for a 3 p.m. tipoff.
