Shaughnessy and Asselstine Propel Valiants Past Pilgrims, 1-0

HENNIKER, N.H. – Senior Sydney Asselstine (Hartington, Ontario/Nepean Wildcats (PWHL)) picked up her fourth career game-winning goal leading the Manhattanville women's hockey team to a 1-0 win over the New England College Pilgrims.

The Valiants jumped out early and dominated play throughout the first period, outshooting the Pilgrims 13-6. New England College goaltender Lauren Hopps was nearly unbeatable on the day, going on to stop 38 of the 39 shots she faced.

Manhattanville continued to create majority of the scoring chances in the second period. It didn't take long for the Valiants to take the lead as Asselstine buried her sixth goal of the year just over five minutes into play. Fellow seniors Alla Traun (Edina, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds (JWHL)) and Michele Meggiolaro (Whippany, N.J./New Jersey Colonials (MAWHA)) assisted on the play.

New England College had several chances to draw the game even but senior goaltender Kirsten Shaughnessy (Le Center, Minn./LeSueur-Henderson St. Peter) was perfect on the day, turning away all 19 shots she faced en route to her third shutout of the season.  This sets a new career high in shutouts for the senior.

The Valiants will play their final regular-season home game Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m., as the team celebrates its six graduating seniors with Senior Day at Playland Ice Casino. It will be the first ever meeting between Manhattanville and Franklin Pierce.
