Men's Basketball Comes Back to Stun Eastern in Overtime on Senior Day

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Junior Anthony Maestre (Bronx, N.Y./Mount St. Michael Academy) had all 21 of his points in the final 25 minutes of play as the Manhattanville College men's basketball overcame another double-digit deficit in the second half to force overtime and eventually pull away for a 93-86 win over Eastern University on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at Kennedy Gym.

Maestre had as many points (eight) as the entire Eastern team in the five-minute overtime, as Manhattanville outscored Eastern 15-8 in the extra frame to earn the victory. Senior Wills Flynn (Miami, Fla./Westminster Christian) started the extra session with a big three to put the home team ahead and the Valiants never trailed from there. The lead grew to eight twice in the overtime, the last coming after a Maestre bucket made it 90-82 with 1:15 left.

In addition to Maestre's 21 points, Flynn also came up big on Senior Day with 13 points and junior Juan Camacho (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/New Horizons) added 18 points, six rebounds and three blocks. Freshman Victor Troya (Miami, Fla./Miami Springs Senior) also chipped in six points and a game-high 10 rebounds off the bench for Manhattanville (8-15, 4-8 Freedom).

Shaquan Turk led all scorers with a game-high 37 points and added nine rebounds for Eastern (9-14, 5-7 Freedom), which has its postseason hopes take a big hit with the defeat.

Things did not look promising for Manhattanville with under five minutes remaining, as the Valiants trailed by a 72-62 score after a pair of Malcolm Garrison free throws. The Eastern lead was still six with 1:16 left before Maestre hit a big three to make it a one-possession game at 78-75 with 1:03 on the clock. After two missed shots and a key defensive rebound by Troya with 28 seconds left, the Valiants opted not to wait for the final shot and instead got another three from Maestre that tied the score at 78 with 21 seconds remaining.

The home team played good defense on the final possession, forcing a tough inside shot from Turk that did not fall and sending the game to overtime.

Manhattanville seemed to be in control of the game in the first half, leading by as many as 14 points after a free throw by freshman Dom Arena (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) made the score 30-16 with 8:07 to go in the first half. But Eastern outscored Manhattanville 16-2 the rest of the way to knot the score at 32 at the half. Sophomore Charles Nardone (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) had all 10 of his points in the first half to lead the Valiants.

The Valiants finished the game shooting 49.2 percent (31 of 63) from the field, including a useful 10-of-24 (41.7 percent) from beyond the arc. The home team also got to the line 29 times, making 21 (72.4 percent) – including an 8-of-10 effort in overtime to seal the win.

The game marked the final collegiate home game for Manhattanville's three graduating seniors, Flynn, Sean Sampson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Kent School) and Niko Emanuilidis (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville).

Manhattanville will close out the season with two games on the road, beginning on Tuesday when the Valiants travel to DeSales with another chance to play the spoiler role beginning at 8 p.m.
