GENEVA, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College offense could not get going for the second straight night, as D3hockey.com #15 Hobart College posted a 47-18 edge in shots on the way to a 3-0 victory over the Valiants in an ECAC West Conference men's hockey contest on Saturday afternoon at the Geneva Recreation Center.
Three different players found the net and Frank Oplinger turned aside all 18 shots he faced for Hobart (18-6-0, 11-3-0 ECAC West), which clinched the top seed in the upcoming ECAC West Tournament with the victory.
Senior
Brian Fleming (Saint John, N.B./Northern Cyclones (AJHL)) again crossed the 40-save plateau with 44 stops for Manhattanville (7-12-5, 2-10-2 ECAC West), which was shut out in back-to-back games for the first time in program history.
Manhattanville had its chances to score in the first period thanks to four power-play opportunities, but the visitors managed only shots while man up. Hobart took advantage of that and got the first goal of the game with 1:27 left in the period off the stick of Brad McBride.
After a scoreless second period, the Statesmen scored twice in the final five minutes of the third period to put the game away. Mac Olsen doubled the Hobart lead with 4:44 left with his ninth of the year, and Robert Sovik added some insurance on the power play with 1:33 remaining in the contest.
Manhattanville finished the game 0-for-7 on the power play, while Hobart was scoreless on its first seven man-up chances before scoring late on the eighth opportunity.
The Valiants will close out the regular season at home on Friday, as the team celebrates its eight seniors with Senior Night before an ECAC West Conference matchup with Neumann beginning at 7 p.m. at Playland Ice Casino.
