SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - Senior
Kirsten Shaughnessy (Le Center, Minn./LeSueur-Henderson St. Peter) recorded 21 saves en route to her fourth shutout of the season, helping the Manhattanville College women's hockey team defeat Saint Michael's 2-0 on Friday evening. Sophomore
Kayley Romano (Viera, Fla./Boston Shamrocks) scored the game-winning goal while senior
Aubrey Bachand (Harwichport, Mass./Vermont Academy) added the insurance.
Manhattanville (10-9-5, 8-5-3 ECAC East) clinches the third seed in the upcoming ECAC East Conference Tournament with the victory. The Valiants will face either Southern Maine, UMass Boston or Castleton State in the first round depending on tomorrow's outcomes.

It was a goaltending battle throughout as both keepers entered the third period without any goals allowed.  Through a relatively even first period, both teams registered six shots on goal with neither side able to put one in the back of the net.

The second period was controlled by the Valiants who outshot Saint Michael's 12-9 in the second frame. Even though the Valiants created majority of the scoring chances, solid goaltending from sophomore Tina Frasca was the reason these two teams entered the third period even at zero.

Just over two minutes into the third period junior
Kyra Herbert (Plainfield, N.H./Lebanon) put a shot on goal which was initially saved by Frasca before Romano was able to put the rebound past the keeper, netting her third goal of the season and her first career game winning goal.

Just over five minutes later, at the 8:22 mark of the third period, good passing between freshman
Cassandra Kent (Lake Placid, NY/Northwood) and senior
Rachael Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn./Sound Shore Warriors (MAWHL)) led to Bachand's ninth goal of the season.

A perfect performance by Shaughnessy kept the Purple Knights from ever getting on the score sheet. Her fourth shutout of the season puts Shaughnessy in an eighth-place tie all time for shutouts in a single season.

The team has a quick turnaround as they face Saint Anselm tomorrow at 1:00 PM.Â
