DALLAS, Pa. - Senior
Alyson Caiazzo (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Saviour) stepped on the floor for the final time for Manhattanville women's basketball on Saturday afternoon, tallying a game-high 18 points and 18 rebounds to becoming the all-time rebounds leader at Manhattanville while helping the Valiants take down Misericordia by a final score of 76-55.
With the 18 rebounds, Caiazzo surpassed Theresa Carey '82 for the college's all-time rebounds record, finishing her stellar career with 1,159 career boards, a mark that is second all-time in Middle Atlantic Conference history behind only the 1,165 of Drew University's Leslie Rushton from 1980-84. Caiazzo's 18 points also moved her up fifth all-time on the Manhattanville women's basketball scoring list with 1,227 total points, surpassing both Taylor Wilson '13 and Karen Vercelli '86 on the day. She also will leave as Manhattanville's all-time leader in field-goal percentage (.513) and blocks (201).
Manhattanville (11-14, 2-12 Freedom) had four players finish in double-figures, utilizing a solid offensive effort to defeat Misericordia (1-24, 1-13 Freedom). Senior
Bri Pabon (Newington, Conn./Newington) contributed 14 points for the Valiants while juniors
Ashley Raaf (Rockaway Beach, N.Y./Christ The King) and
Ashley Franklin (New Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) each finished with 13 points apiece. The Valiants heckled the Cougars defensively, scoring 28 points off 22 Misericordia turnovers. For the Cougars, Shelby Brochetti and Lauren Smicherko led the way offensively, finishing with 16 and 12 points, respectively.
Misericordia jumped out early on Manhattanville, taking a 9-2 lead after two minutes of play. The Cougars continued to play strong in the opening 10 minutes of play, leading the Valiants 17-6 at the 12:14 mark. Despite trailing by 11 early in the contest, the Valiants would mount a comeback, going on a 14-4 run, pulling within one point after a jumper from Caiazzo. After a three-pointer from Pabon with just over six minutes left in the first half, the Valiants took a 27-24 lead. A three-pointer from Brochetti brought the Cougars back within one point with 4:39 left, becoming the closest Misericordia would trail for the remainder of the contest. The Valiants ended the first half on a 12-4 run, taking a 41-32 lead into the half.
The Valiants came out hot offensively in the second half, continuing to extend their lead over Misericordia. Manhattanville jumped out on a 16-4 in the opening eight minutes of the second half to take a 57-36 lead over the Cougars. The closest Misericordia could come to the Valiants in the second half was a 13-point deficit with only 4:26 left before Manhattanville pulled away with a 76-55 win to end the 2014-15 season.
The Valiants are set to return every member of the roster with the (big) exception of Caiazzo in 2015-16, as the squad looks to make another step toward contending for a Freedom Conference championship next season.
