Martin Earns 300th Career Win as Softball Ends Spring Break with a Victory

CLERMONT, Fla. – One day after picking up his 200th win as a Valiant head coach, Dale Martin earned his 300th career coaching victory with Manhattanville's 9-7 win over Salve Regina University on Thursday night to wrap up the team's week at the NTC Spring Games. The day started with a tough 6-5 (8 inn.) loss to Wittenberg University at the National Training Center.

With the team's split today, Martin comes back from Florida with a career 300-276-1 (.521) record as a collegiate head coach, including his year at Division II Mercy and his five-year run at Division I Fairleigh Dickinson. His 201 wins as a Valiant are one short of second place all-time at the school.

The milestone win came in the squad's final game of the trip, as Manhattanville overcame a four-run first-inning deficit to defeat Salve Regina by a 9-7 score on Thursday night.

Freshman Laurel Coito (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) had a breakout game at the plate, going 2 for 4 with four runs batted in and a run scored. Graduate student Shauna Mulkerin (Branchburg, N.J./Immaculata) and sophomore Brittany Deieso (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) both produced from the bottom of the lineup as well with two hits and two runs scored each, while senior Rosaria Callara (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) had a game-high three hits.

After Salve Regina scored four runs in the bottom of the first, Manhattanville came back with three in the second and two in the third to tie the score at five. The Valiants took advantage of three Seahawk errors in the second inning, getting RBIs from junior Alyx Scapperotti (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) and freshman Alexis Ventarola (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester), with Ventarola's single extending her hitting streak to 10 games. After two quick outs in the third inning, Mulkerin and Scapperotti both singled and then came home on Coito's two-run double.

The Valiants put up three more runs in the fifth inning, with Coito again providing a two-run base hit and sophomore Shelbee Damianos (Ojai, Calif./Nordhoff) adding a sacrifice fly. Deieso's RBI single in the sixth provided the squad a little more insurance as well.

Freshman Alicia Marino (Mahopac, N.Y./Pleasantville) earned her (and the team's) fourth win of the season, allowing six earned runs on nine hits in seven innings of work.

Manhattanville came back from an early four-run deficit in the first game of the day as well, but Wittenberg pushed across two runs in the top of the eighth inning and held on in the bottom half for a 6-5 victory.

Manhattanville spread around the offense in the contest, as eight different Valiants had one hit, five different Valiants scored a run and four Valiants drove in a run. Coito and Scapperotti both had a hit, an RBI and a run scored each to lead the squad.

With the game tied after seven innings, the international tiebreaker went into effect as the teams played the eighth. After a hit batter and passed ball put two Tigers in scoring position, Abby Baker delivered a two-run single to give Wittenberg a 6-4 lead. The Valiants got one run back in the bottom half thanks to an error, but could not push across the game-tying run.

The Tigers put the Valiants behind from the very beginning, scoring twice in the first and twice more in the third to take a 4-0 lead after two and a half innings. Manhattanville did not get its first hit until the third inning, when Deieso led off with a single, moved to third on a Callara double, and came home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Damianos.

Manhattanville added three more in the fifth inning to tie the score. Mulkerin led off the inning with a single, and after a sacrifice bunt came home on a Coito RBI base hit. Marino and Scapperotti followed with run-scoring singles to knot the score after five.

Coito (0-3) took the loss despite a solid effort in the circle, allowing five earned runs without a walk in eight innings of work. Abby Haab earned the win in relief for Wittenberg, allowing one unearned run over the final 3.1 innings.

Manhattanville (4-6) will head back north to begin Freedom Conference play on Wednesday, when the team is scheduled to take on Eastern for two games beginning at 3 p.m. in St. Davids, Pa.
