PURCHASE, N.Y. – Senior
Meghann Haggerty (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields) led all scorers with five goals and six points while sophomore
Lauren Cassidy (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) made 15 saves at the other end of the field to lead the Manhattanville College women's lacrosse team to an 11-9 victory over Mount Saint Mary College in non-conference action on Tuesday night at GoValiants.com Field.
Haggerty was one of only two players with more than one goal for Manhattanville (3-2) and also grabbed five ground balls, controlled three draws and caused two turnovers in the win. The senior has already surpassed her previous career high with 20 goals and 26 points through the first five games of the year. Freshman
Jennifer Machin (Brunswick, Maine/North Yarmouth Academy) scored the first two goals of her career in addition to nabbing a team-best six ground balls, while sophomore
Sarah Dalsey (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) also added a goal and an assist to go with six of Manhattanville's 12 draw controls.
Mount St. Mary (2-3) was led by Claire Duffy with four goals and a game-high seven ground balls, as well as Nicole Scicutella with a goal and two helpers and Kayla Goman with a pair of tallies.
Haggerty and the Valiants started the game off quickly, as the senior opened the scoring 22 seconds into the contest and then picked up a turnover and went in alone to score her second a mere 22 seconds after that. Following a MSMC own goal, the Valiants held a 3-0 lead 5:18 into the contest.
Back-to-back scores from Machin and Haggerty got the home team back its three-goal lead at 5-2 before Mount St. Mary scored three in a row to knot the score. The game remained that way before junior
Grace Kraemer (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) took a feed from Haggerty and found the net for her first of the year with 3:38 remaining, and Dalsey added an unassisted tally to put the Valiants up 7-5 at the break.
Haggerty increased the lead to three yet again early in the second half before the Knights came back with three in a row, including two from Duffy, to even the score at eight with 13:05 remaining.
But Manhattanville had one response left in them. Freshman
Christina Leva (Hawthorne, N.Y./Westlake) scored the go-ahead goal off a nice pass from Dalsey to make it a 9-8 score with 10:05 remaining. Haggerty struck 72 seconds later from the eight-meter arc for a two-goal lead, and Machin provided some insurance with 5:23 left to give the home team some breathing room.
Cassidy continued her excellent play in goal for Manhattanville, stopping 9-of-13 shots in the second half to finish with 15 saves on the night, while also limiting the Knights to a 1-for-7 effort from the eight-meter arc. Carly Lennon took the loss for MSMC, making 13 saves on 24 shots.
Manhattanville will look to snap the alternation of wins and losses on Friday, as the Valiants try for their second straight victory at Ramapo beginning at 4 p.m.
