Haggerty and Nardone Lead Women's Lacrosse to Season-Opening 17-10 Win

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Senior Meghann Haggerty (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields) scored a team-high five goals and freshman AnnaMarie Nardone (Thornwood, N.Y./Westlake) registered a game-high six points in her collegiate debut to lead the Manhattanville College women's lacrosse team to a 17-10 win over the College of Mount St. Vincent in the Valiants' 2015 season-opener on Saturday afternoon at Columbia University's Baker Athletic Complex.

After missing out on its first chance to open the season on Wednesday, Manhattanville (1-0) got the season off to a good start against the Dolphins. Haggerty set a new career high with five goals and eight ground balls, while Nardone scored four times and added two assists. Sophomore Sarah Dalsey (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) also scored four times and added four draw controls and four caused turnovers, and classmate Arianna Kreush (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) netted three in her first game on the field for the Valiants as well.

Shannon Steimel tied Haggerty and Nardone for game highs with five goals and six points to lead Mount St. Vincent (0-2), followed by Kayla Carigliano with three goals and Ardiana Mehmetaj with four points on two goals and two assists.

The Valiants came flying out of the gates on Saturday, scoring the first five goals of the game to take a 5-0 lead 5:14 into the contest. Haggerty had three of those goals for the visitors, including two in 19 seconds to open the scoring. The Dolphins closed to within three at 7-4 before the Valiants closed the half on a 5-1 run, getting three goals from Nardone to build up an 11-5 lead at the half.

Manhattanville outshot CMSV 28-8 in the first half and also controlled 10 of 18 draws in the opening 30 minutes to help build an early advantage.

The Dolphins never got closer than five goals in the second half, as the Valiants countered every MSV goal with one of their own.

The Valiants finished the game with a decisive 44-18 edge in shots. The visitors also went a perfect 9-for-9 on clear attempts and went 5-for-12 from the eight-meter line.

Sophomore Lauren Cassidy (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) had a solid game in her first career outing between the pipes, making five saves in the first half and eight overall to pick up her first collegiate victory. Kacie McCormack made nine saves in a losing effort for Mount St. Vincent.

Manhattanville will head south for two games next week in Hilton Head, S.C., beginning with a Wednesday afternoon matchup with Wesley starting at 4 p.m.
