OLD WESTBURY, N.Y.- Led by a solid pitching performance from freshman
Anthony LoFaro (Haworth, N.J./Northern Valley Demarest), the Manhattanville baseball team utilized a seven-run seventh inning to pull away from Old Westbury on Wednesday afternoon, beating the Panthers by a final score of 9-5 in non-conference play.
LoFaro tossed 6 2/3 innings for Manhattanville (8-7), allowing three runs with only one earned, giving up five hits while striking out three Old Westbury (9-4) batters. At the plate, junior
Jordanis Nunez (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond) continued to produce for the Valiants, stroking four hits, tallying three RBIs and a run in the win.
The Panthers were the first to get a run on the board, scoring an unearned run in the third inning on a throwing error from sophomore
Anthony Iannuzzi (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) trying to catch a runner stealing second. The 1-0 lead for Old Westbury did not last long as Nunez stepped up the following inning, smoking a two-run single up the middle, bringing home freshman
Nick Campana (Yonkers, N.Y./Iona Prep) and Iannuzzi to give the Valiants a 2-1 lead after four. The Panthers eventually notched the game up in the fifth before taking a 3-2 lead in the sixth after an RBI single from Jake Schwartz.
With a 3-2 deficit headed into the seventh inning, the Valiants had more than an answer. Manhattanville manufactured seven runs in the seventh, taking advantage of Old Westbury errors. After a dropped ball in right field, sophomore
Robbie Lynch (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) came home to tie the game up at three. With runners in scoring position, freshman
Joe Booker (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Port Jefferson) doubled down the left field line, giving the Valiants back a lead at 5-3. Sophomore
John Delahanty (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) then stepped in as a pinch hitter, doubling to left field, scoring Booker from second to make it 6-3. An RBI single from senior
Nick Euvino (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) followed by an RBI double from Nunez expanded the Valiant lead to five, 8-3. Lynch eventually added in on the fun, making it 9-3 with an RBI single to shortstop.
The Panthers tried to mount a comeback in the ninth inning, scoring two runs off freshman
William Mohr (Allendale, N.J./Northern Highlands) before Mohr closed the door with a double play followed by a strikeout to end the game. Mohr tossed 2 1/3 innings in relief, allowing one hit and two runs, helping the Valiants pull away with a 9-5 win over the Panthers.
