PURCHASE, N.Y. – Senior
Alyssa Casino (Rye Brook, N.Y./Maria Regina) went 3-for-3 with two runs batted in and two runs scored to lead the Manhattanville College softball team to a quick 9-0 win over Lehman College in non-conference action at Manhattanville Field on Wednesday. Game two of the scheduled doubleheader was postponed due to rain.
With the weather forecasted to turn later in the afternoon, Manhattanville (12-17) made quick work of Lehman (8-14), scoring eight times in the first two innings and then doing what they could to make the game official.
In addition to Casino, sophomore
Shelbee Damianos (Ojai, Calif./Nordhoff) was also perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a walk, two RBIs and two runs scored. Freshman
Alexis Ventarola (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) also reached base twice, drove in a run and scored twice, while senior
Rosaria Callara (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) walked twice, drove in a run and scored as well.
Callara (4-8) also earned the victory in the circle for Manhattanville, coming one fifth-inning single away from a no-hitter. The senior struck out five and allowed just the one base hit in five innings of work to earn her fourth win of the year.
Manhattanville wasted little time getting on the board with three runs in the first inning, getting RBI singles from Damianos and Casino to go with a third run scoring on a Lehman throwing error.
The first three batters reached in the second inning, with Ventarola plating Callara with an RBI single to make it a 4-0 game. A groundout from sophomore
Brittany Deieso (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) and another Damianos base hit drove in two more runs, followed by a Casino RBI single and a bases-loaded walk to Callara that put the home team up by eight.
The rain started up in the bottom of the third after a one-out triple from Deieso, who came home on a double by sophomore
Adrena Daw (Crompond, N.Y./Walter Panas) to give the Valiants a 9-0 lead.
Callara did her part to move the game along by retiring nine in a row during the second, third and fourth innings. Chariny Graciano broke up the no-hit bid with a clean single to center to lead off the fifth and was at third base with one out, but a liner was snagged by Callara and she threw to third for the game-ending double play.
Manhattanville will hope for better weather on Saturday, when the Valiants honor their three departing players with Senior Day before a Freedom Conference doubleheader against Misericordia University beginning at 1 p.m. at Manhattanville Field.
