PURCHASE, N.Y. – Anastasia Araviakis led King's (Pa.) College with six goals and two assists as the Lady Monarchs spoiled Manhattanville College's Senior Day with an 18-9 victory in Freedom Conference women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at GoValiants.com Field.
Gabriella Morrocu also scored five times and Kendra McCoy had two goals and two assists for King's (8-6, 4-2 Freedom), who will be the third seed in the upcoming Freedom Conference Tournament.
Senior
Meghann Haggerty (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields) and sophomore
Sarah Dalsey (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) had two goals each to pace Manhattanville (4-11, 1-5 Freedom), while five other Valiants had one goal each – including senior
Carly Brunco (Johnstown, N.Y./Johnstown) scoring her first collegiate goal in her final game. Haggerty also tied with junior
Grace Kraemer (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) with a game-high five ground balls apiece, while Dalsey controlled a game-high eight draws as well.
Manhattanville arguably had the better of the play on Saturday, outshooting King's by a 38-30 margin – including doubling the Lady Monarchs up in the second half, 22-11. But the visitors were kept in the game by netminder Victoria Zawacki, who made 16 saves on 25 shots to keep her team ahead.
King's got off to a quick start, scoring two goals in the first 47 seconds and taking a 7-2 lead with 10:35 gone by in the first half. But the Valiants battled back by scoring three of the next four goals to get back in the contest. Sophomore
Arianna Kreush (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) started the rally with her 11th of the year, followed by two goals in 33 seconds from Dalsey and freshman
Christina Leva (Hawthorne, N.Y./Westlake) to make it a 7-5 game.
Sophomore
Olivia Drew (York, Maine/York) followed up an Araviakis tally with her fifth of the year to keep the home team within two at 8-6 with 5:11 remaining in the first half and Haggerty did likewise two minutes later, but two King's tallies in the final two minutes gave the Lady Monarchs an 11-7 lead at the half.
The offense dried up for Manhattanville in the second half, as King's scored the first six goals of the frame to take a 17-7 lead with 11:45 remaining. A large part of that was due to Zawacki, who made 11 saves in the final 30 minutes – including five stops during the game-changing 6-0 run.
Brunco broke the streak with her first collegiate goal, finding the net with 5:05 left on the clock. Dalsey also scored late for Manhattanville to round out the scoring, but Zawacki made six more stops down the stretch to keep the home team from mounting a comeback.
The loss concludes the season for Manhattanville and also marks the final collegiate game for Valiant seniors Haggerty, Brunco and
Kirsten Shaughnessy (Le Center, Minn./LeSueur-Henderson St. Peter).
